Chicago Med dished out some exciting developments in season 8, episode 8. There was a close call involving Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) and a car accident, as well as the engagement between April (Yaya DaCosta) and Ethan (Brian Tee).

One development fans definitely didn’t see coming, however, was a mini-crossover involving a fan favorite and a newcomer to the franchise. Apparently, the two characters in question go way back, which hints at some interesting possibilities for the future.

Who is the new doctor on Chicago Med?

The character we already know (and love) is Chicago Fire‘s Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende). He pops in for a surprise cameo and exchanges a few words with Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), who he’s only peripherally interacted with over the years.

The person he went to Gaffney to see, however, is someone we don’t know very well: Justin Leo. The doctor was introduced at the beginning of the episode, and we’re told he’s a first-year resident who has spent the last decade working as a search and rescue specialist.

It’s too early to get a feel for his personality and/or dynamics with the rest of the staff, but apparently he goes way back with Gallo. The firefighter reveals that he wanted to visit Leo on his first day at Gaffney, and fist bumps him before they’re interrupted by an incoming patient.

This approach to world-building is nothing new for One Chicago. As we all know, the franchise is built on crossovers and Easter Egg references that make all three shows feel like part of the same universe.

That said, the casualness of this particular crossover is unique. Gallo doesn’t have a ton of screen time but his interaction with Leo gives the newcomer a co-sign that we will keep in mind as we get to know the doctor better. It’s a smart storytelling technique, especially if you want to communicate the fact that the new guy is worth rooting for.

The Leo and Gallo friendship seems as though it’s ripe for exploration in the future, and if we got a chance to see these two pals at the center of a three-part crossover, we won’t be disappointed.
