Why is Severide leaving? That’s the question on everybody’s mind. We’ve been informed that actor Taylor Kinney will be taking a leave of absence from the show, but it’s not yet been revealed how it will be explained on Chicago Fire.
There are countless directions the writers could go in. Severide could get seriously injured, or, as we previously discussed, leave the 51 to spend more time with his mom Jennifer Sheridan (Kim Delaney).
Another potential direction involves a beloved One Chicago figure: Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer).
Is Severide leaving Chicago Fire season 11?
Hear us out. Or read us out, rather. Casey has been gone for a while now, but there’s been effort on the part of the writers and showrunners to keep the character involved in the show. There’s frequent mention of him, whether it be from his ex Brett (Kara Killmer) or a protege like Gallo (Alberto Rosende).
If Casey were to himself taking on something massive like a forest fire in the Pacific Northwest, he could definitely call his old buddy Severide to help bail him out. We know he’s still a firefighter in his neck of the woods, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine a scenario where he finds himself short-staffed and needing a proven veteran like Severide.

A plot development like this would accomplish a couple different things. For one, it would keep Casey involved in the show in a way that doesn’t require the actor to be onscreen. It would be something we hear about and get updated on sporadically.
It would also give Severide’s exit a dramatic weight, as Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) would have to grapple with the possibility he may not come back. Granted, the show has confirmed that Kinney will be back to take up the character’s mantle, but it could do wonders to tease out the tension that’s been building up between the husband and wife.
Do you think Casey will have something to do with Severide’s hiatus?
