3 One Chicago characters we really hope return in 2023
One Chicago had to part ways with multiple characters in 2022. It wasn’t always easy, and more often than not it was hard, but the rest of the cast (and the fans) were able to get through it.
While there are character exits that are irreversible due to things like scheduling or death (Evan Hawkins, looking at you), the majority of One Chicago characters are alive, well, and able to make a return trip to the Windy City if the story requires it.
Here are the top names on our list when it comes to possible returning characters in 2023.
Will Ethan Choi return to Chicago Fire in 2023?
Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) has one of the happiest One Chicago exits in recent memory. The character got to quit Gaffney on his own terms, pursue his career passion, and marry April (Yaya DaCosta). It was well-deserved for one of Med‘s most upright characters.
Because Choi will continue to work in the Windy City, we feel pretty good about the possibility of seeing him pop up for a cameo or maybe even collaborate with the remaining Gaffney staff on a special case.
Will Kelly Severide return to Chicago Fire in 2023?
This one is odd because we’ve been assured that the character will return at some point. The thing is, we don’t know when. Until the Fire writers start to put a storyline in place, we don’t even know when Severide (Taylor Kinney) will be leaving.

Severide also stands out as the only One Chicago character who appears on both this list and the list of 2023 character exits that will hurt us most, which only speaks to his significance within the franchise. We just hope to see him before the end of the year.
Will Jay Halstead return to Chicago PD in 2023?
Wishful thinking? Perhaps. Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) has undergone a weird character arc since he was written off Chicago PD early in season 10. He not only quit the force and walked out on his wife, Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), but he’s extended his stay out of the country without even telling her (or answering most of her calls).
It’s been tough on fans to watch this play out, especially since it feels at odds with the man we got to know over a decade. We hope to see Halstead return, even if it’s for a brief cameo, in 2023, but given how reticent the showrunners and cast have been to confirm a return, we don’t see it happening anytime soon. All we can do is cross our fingers.
