Chicago Fire: Will Taylor Kinney be starring in another TV show?

Taylor Kinney has been the story of 2023. The knowledge that he will be leaving Chicago Fire an unspecified amount of time, coupled with keeping the reason for his departure a secret, has fans wondering when they will get a chance to see the actor on the small screen again.

All signs point to the actor returning to Fire at some point, but the fact that nothing has been set in stone has us understandably worried. What if he doesn’t come back for an entire season? Could Kinney be considering another role on another show in the meantime?

Kinney has had some major film success, as evidenced by his roles in Zero Dark Thirty (2012) and The Other Woman (2014), but he is first and foremost a small screen guy. He got his start on TV and he has won over millions of One Chicago fans thanks to his TV work.

The actor’s TV credits are pretty impressive, with one-off appearances in shows like Bones, Law and Order, and Castle. He also had a recurring role on The Vampire Diaries during the peak of its popularity. What’s interesting about these appearances, however, is that they all predate his One Chicago career.

The Chicago Fire pilot airs in 2012, and since then, Kinney’s acting credits have been exclusive to the franchise’s various titles. It has been over a decade since he appeared in a show in which he wasn’t playing Severide, which is a remarkable feat. It makes sense that he’s near the top of the list when it comes to actors who have appeared in the most One Chicago episodes.

Is all this going to change with the upcoming leave of absence? Will Kinney finally make a pivot and appear in a TV show as a different character? Fortunately, the answer is no. The actor has not made any plans to appear in other projects, which means that once his personal matter has been tended to, Chicago Fire will remain the priority. We can’t wait to have him back.
