3 One Chicago characters who annoy fans in 2023
They can’t all be beloved. One Chicago is known for its sprawling ensemble and talented cast of performers; many of whom cross paths and interact with each during major crossover events. The thing is, some characters, or at least character arcs, can rub fans the wrong way.
Whether by design or otherwise, there are some characters on Chicago Med, Fire and PD that are a bit more grating than the rest. Maybe they’re impeding the progress of established characters or they’re doing things that are out of character based on what we know about them.
Well, here’s three we can think of that have been in rare form in 2023.
Is Kai Tanaka-Reed annoying on Chicago Med?
This one is a no-brainer. Kai Tanaka-Reed (Devin Kawaoka) has quickly established himself as one of the irksome doctors in Chicago Med history. He’s introduced bragging about medical skills that he’s yet to prove, and then he promptly tries to overstep his authority and take over a patient who had been shot and was already being treated by Dr. Marcel (Dominic Rains).
It’s not exactly a revelation to point out that Dr. Tanaka-Reed is meant to be unlikable, and is set up as a sort of anti-Choi (Brian Tee) that the established doctors at Gaffney are going to have to deal with. It’s a testament to Kawaoka’s performance that the character is so easy to despise.
Is Sam Carver annoying on Chicago Fire?
Carver (Jake Lockett) has had lots of ups and downs since joining Chicago Fire. He came across as cocky at first, but then proved himself to be a capable firefighter when it counted. He got close to Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), and seemed to be softening up as season 11 wore on. Once his older brother paid a visit, though, all bets were off.

Carver, who has every reason to despise his brother, took his frustration out on Kidd and lashed out at her when she was trying to help him out. Kidd’s response was a bit much, suggesting that Carver be transferred, but we also get why she was so bothered by his actions. Lighten up, man.
Is Jay Halstead annoying on Chicago PD?
Believe us, it hurts just as much to put Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) on this list as it does to read about it. We can’t really fault the actor for what’s happened to the character, since he hasn’t been onscreen. Rather, it’s the way the PD writing team has decided to write the character out of the show, and crummy way he’s treated Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) since he left.
Not only did he leave Chicago and go to Central America to fight drug cartels, but he made a promise that he would be back in eight months. He’s not only not kept that promise, as he’s extended his stay, but he didn’t even call Upton and tell her himself. Not great.
