From the moment news broke that Jesse Spencer would be returning as Matt Casey, fans have been speculating about his return perhaps being to help fill the void left by Taylor Kinney’s temporary exit as Kelly Severide. And it’s an understandable assumption to make.

News of Spencer’s return came only weeks after word broke that Kinney would be taking a leave of absence, which seemed to suggest Spencer’s return was designed to help fill the void of losing Kinney for several episodes this season. And while this very well might be the case as getting Spencer back as Casey definitely will help lessen the blow of Kinney not appearing in several episodes, it turns out the storyline revolving around his return will tell a different story.

Fans have assumed Severide is the reason Casey is coming back to town, but it appears there’s another Chicago Fire character responsible for his return.

Why is Casey coming back to Chicago Fire?

While many had assumed Casey might be coming back to Firehouse 51 to fill in for Severide or lend a hand due to his absence, it seems Severide has nothing to do with Casey’s return. Instead, it appears that Casey is coming back to help another member of 51 with a very special project!

As revealed in the episode synopsis for the April 5 episode, “Danger Is All Around,” which will mark Jesse Spencer’s return as Matt Casey, it’s actually Kidd who is responsible for bringing Casey back to 51. So just what has Kidd called upon Casey to help her with?

According to the episode synopsis, “a familiar face returns to Firehouse 51 to serve with Kidd on a special task force.” This suggests that Casey will be coming back to Chicago to join Kidd in serving on the task force which makes sense given they both had served together on Truck Company 81.

The move should be an exciting one as it’ll not only give us the chance to see Casey back on the show but to also see him team back up with Kidd and bring us some amazing new scenes between Spencer and Miranda Rae Mayo!
