Severide (Taylor Kinney). He’s gone, but is he coming back? That’s the question fans have to entertain as we enter the home stretch of Chicago Fire‘s 11th season. There hasn’t been any confirmation from Kinney or the showrunners that he will be back, which understandably has some people concerned.

But we want to maintain a positive outlook here. We decided to operate from the standpoint that Severide is coming back, and there is, surprisingly, a lot of evidence to support the fact that he will be back before long.

Here’s a breakdown of the top 3 reasons fans should expect to see the character back in the mix.

Are Severide and Kidd still married on Chicago Fire?

Severide’s marriage to Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) has been a central storyline for the last couple seasons, and there’s been a lot of time dedicated to Kidd and her struggles with being apart from her husband. If the writers had no intention of bringing Severide back to revitalize their marriage, then the emphasis would more or less be for nothing.

There’s also the theory that Kidd is pregnant with Severide’s child, and that the news of said pregnancy is what will ultimately bring Severide back to Chicago and to the 51. That’s a bit of a stretch, but it’s definitely on the table as a possibility.

Who replaced Severide on Chicago Fire?

Severide has been holding down the lieutenant role at the 51 for several years now, and appointing a worthy successor is going to be important if he decides to leave. Right now the show has a floating lieutenant, which suggests temporary status, until the character comes back.

There seemed to be some hinting at the possibility that Cruz (Joe Minoso) would step in and fill the role in a long-term sense, but the character is clearly dealing with the pressure of raising a family. Given that there are no clear successors, the odds seem high that Severide will simply reclaim his job title when he’s done with arson investigation training program.

Is Severide coming back to Chicago Fire?

When Casey (Jesse Spencer) left Chicago Fire in season 10, there was lots of hoopla. There were heartfelt interactions between him and the rest of the 51, including a very touching interaction between Casey and Severide. Severide got no such hoopla. Due to whatever personal events Kinney is committed, the writers had to more or less write the character off offscreen.

Severide is a huge deal on Chicago Fire. It sort of goes without saying that him and Casey were the backbone of the show for its first decade. Even if the character is ultimately written later on, they would have to bring him back to give him a proper, emotional sendoff. We will definitely be seeing him again in the future.
