One Chicago is going through a transitional period. All three shows are coming back for new seasons on NBC, but cast turnover, coupled with NBC’s decision to cut down on budget, means that these seasons will be slightly different.

Arguably the biggest exit of all three shows was Nick Gehlfuss, who plays Dr. Will Halstead on Chicago Med. He decided to leave the position he held for nearly a decade, and move to Seattle to be with another former character, Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto). Gehlfuss reflected on this big decision during a recent interview with Variety.

Is Will Halstead still on Chicago Med?

Gehlfuss debuted as Dr. Halstead in Chicago Fire season 3, before he was tasked with leading Chicago Med. He’s been the closest the show has gotten to a protagonist, from his charismatic presence to the various romantic subplots that he’d led over the years.

When asked why he decided to leave, the actor noted that he had taken Dr. Halstead as far as he felt he could go, and that he wanted to challenge himself with different kinds of characters in the future.

"“I think that comes down to a creative part of you, or the energy or spirit you have that you’re either built for a very long time with one person or not,” he told the outlet. “I am attracted to the profession for the variety in it, and eight years is a long time. It’s two college degrees! I’m joking now that I basically have a doctorate in television.”"

Gehlfuss doesn’t have any new projects lined up yet, but he did joke about wanting to play someone who spent most of his time outdoors after eight years of working in hospitals. He mentioned that a cowboy would be fun to play, and that ultimately, he wants to “develop new, different characters.”

On the bright side, the actor said he would consider returning to Chicago Med at some point in the future. Whether it’s a full-time return or a cameo, we eagerly await seeing Halstead in the Gaffney Medical center once again.
