The summer hiatus is turning out to be much longer. Is this a bad sign for Chicago Fire? Could we see NBC cancel the series?
There are a lot of concerns about scripted TV shows right now. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are putting everything on hold. We’re certainly not complaining when it comes to those striking; they deserve fair deals. That doesn’t stop us from being concerned.
NBC recently shared its updated fall 2023 schedule. The entire One Chicago franchise is on the move to 2024. Is there a chance that it will actually mean we will see the series canceled? Is Chicago Fire season 12 still going to happen?

Chicago Fire season 12 is still happening at NBC
There is some good news right now. Chicago Fire season 12 is still happening. NBC is simply moving the series to the midseason for this year. It’s a move that all broadcast networks are doing for the bulk of their scripted shows.
With so many networks pushing their scripted slate to 2024, we don’t see “unrenewals” happening, especially not for a show like Fire. The entire One Chicago lineup is the best in terms of live ratings for NBC. The network had already looked for a way to keep the shows coming back but reducing the costs. It shows the network wants to keep these shows going.
A move to the midseason could help for the year. It will mean the episode counts are reduced to ensure May finales. That could mean limited episodes where not all our favorite characters show up, as that was the initial plan to help reduce the costs of the shows.
When could we see season 12? The earliest is January 2024, but it’s all going to depend on the strike action at this time. The longer that goes on for, the longer we’ll need to wait as writing and production still need to happen.
