Brian Tee says ‘door is open’ for Chicago Med season 9 return
There are quite a few characters we said goodbye to during Chicago Med season 8. Some of them came as more of a shock than others, and some were just hard pills to swallow. One of the exits we really didn’t want to see happen was Ethan Choi stepping away from the medical center.
The good news is that the exit wasn’t “permanent” in terms of killing off the character. Choi was able to marry his love April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) and the couple left the hospital to start up their own private clinic. We did see actor Brian Tee return, but it was behind the camera, as he directed a season 8 episode. The chances of seeing a full-fledged, onscreen return are a bit more slim…

Will Brian Tee return in Chicago Med season 9?
To be clear, Tee has not slammed the door on a Chicago Med return. His character still practices medicine in the Windy City, so a cameo appearance would actually make a lot of sense. “I enjoy the people”, he explained to Variety. “At the end of the day, that’s what really matters. I love the cast, I love the crew. To be able to come back and play with them again would just be a joy to do. The door will always be open.”
While it’s encouraging to know that Tee is open to a particularly good story arc involving his character, there is something to be said about wasting a perfectly good character exit on an unnecessary cameo. Choi married April Sexton, and outside of a social call, there isn’t really a reason for either of them to get back in the mix at Gaffney Medical Center.
Bringing Choi or Sexton back so soon would only serve to undermine their storybook ending in season 8, which helped to smooth over character exits that initially felt underwhelming the first time around (especially with regards to Sexton).
There’s a chance Tee could be called upon to make a cameo in season 9, especially if Chicago Med feels the need to cash in on nostalgia as they fill the void left by Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), but our suggestion would be to look forward, rather than backward.
Tee is slated to appear in the upcoming drama series Expats, and will serve as a producer on the anthology series The Scapegoat. Both projects will be released in 2024.
