Marina Squerciati is responsible for some of the emotional and emotionally devastating moments in Chicago PD history. Her portrayal of Burgess has gotten even better in recent seasons, as she’s been given some truly nerve-racking storylines (shooting, kidnapping of her child, etc) to deal with. When it came time for Squerciati to pick her favorite PD episode, we assumed that it would be one that prominently features her character.

The actress confirmed this suspicion during an interview the One Chicago Chi-Hard Fan Event. She told the fans that her favorite episode is the season 7 outing “I Was Here”, which follows Burgess as she attempts to break up a sex trafficking ring in the Windy City. It’s obviously a very grip topic, and the character handles it with all the gravitas and severity that fans have come to expect.

What is the best Burgess episode of Chicago PD?

The thing that made it stand out for Squerciati, though, was the scene in which her character is told that she miscarried due to a physical attack she suffered. It’s an absolutely harrowing scene, and the actress plays it perfectly. “My favorite scene…would probably be the episode where I lost the baby”, she recalled. “There are so many issues from that episode, and they all tested me in a way.”

The scene, and episode as a whole, proved difficult to shoot from an emotional and a practical standpoint. “There are so many issues from that episode, and they all tested me in a way”, the actress added. “[The issues] were all hard to figure out. Hard to shoot. Hard to act.” Still, the final result speaks for itself.

Squerciati is going to have to pull from a similarly traumatized place when Chicago PD returns in 2024. Her character will have to deal with the fact that Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), the man she co-parents and nearly conceived a child with, could die as a result of his injuries on the job.

It will no doubt lead to some incredible season 11 scenes. We just hope that the couple make it to see another day (and another season) together.
