Taylor Kinney’s return to Chicago Fire has sparked more questions than answers. Is the actor going to be sticking around? Why did he leave in the first place? The most prominent, however, has to do with his involvement in the season 12 premiere. The last we heard, his character Severide was on the move and aiding arson investigations in other states.

The season 11 finale gave fans, and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) the impression that Severide was not in a rush to get back home. Why he decided to keep his travel plans a secret from his wife remains unclear, but we maintain hope that it will be explained upon his return.

When is Taylor Kinney returning to Chicago Fire?

Yes, Severide will be appearing in the upcoming premiere. The character is said to be back in the mix during the first couple episodes of season 12, and given that Chicago Fire likes to kick off their seasons with a bang, there’s no better time for the character to make a triumphant return to the 51 and patch things up with Kidd.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Kinney will be present during the first leg of the season, and whatever uncertainty the outlet had regarding his long term plans were seemingly quelled by Deadline, who claimed that he will be around for the entire year. “His future appearances beyond that are not confirmed”, wrote Nellie Andreeva, “But I hear the actor’s return is expected to be full-time.”

Kinney’s return could not have come at a better time for Chicago Fire. The firefighting drama is on the cusp of losing characters like Casey (Jesse Spencer), Brett (Kara Killmer), and Mouch (Christian Stolte), depending on the way things play out. Casey and Brett could easily move to Oregon if they decide to get engaged, and Mouch could potentially die following his encounter with a screw-loose sniper in the season 11 finale.

It’s a time of flux for the show, and being able to secure the return of a central character like Severide is going to go a long way in making the audience feel like they’re still in good hands. Season 12 can’t get here soon enough.
