Will Trent season 2 release updates, strike news, cast, and everything we know so far
Will Trent may not have shaken the television world the way some of its procedural peers did in 2023, but it was enjoyed by millions of viewers and renewed for a second season. A season that was scheduled to premiere in the fall, were it not for the writers and actors strikes. As with most of the scripted television that was slated to close out the year, Will Trent has been delayed to 2024.
But how will this delay affect the rollout of the season? There have been lots of developments with regards to the actors strike (the writers strike is, after all, resolved), which has impacted the production schedule and the amount of episodes that Will Trent will be able to release. Here’s what you need to know about the show ahead of its sophomore season.
Does Will Trent season 2 have a release date?
Nope. Not yet, at least. Well, technically, we know the show will be returning in 2024, but it’s still unclear whether season 2 will premiere at the top of the year, or closer to the summertime. It’s unknown because a resolution for the actors strike was just reached recently.
According to Variety, attempts to make a deal on Monday, November 6 resulted in both sides coming away unhappy, due to the inability to agree on the application of AI. “There are several essential items on which we still do not have an agreement, including AI”, the union wrote in an official statement. “We will keep you informed as events unfold.”
Thankfully, both sides were able to come to a tentative agreement on Wedesday, November 8. ABC will be able to issue an official release date for Will Trent season 2 soon. The same goes for the rest of the shows in its stable, including The Rookie, Grey’s Anatomy and The Good Doctor.
Who is part of Will Trent season 2 cast?
ABC hasn’t provided an official confirmation regarding the complete roster of actors for season 2, but we are expecting the return of most of the major cast members for Will Trent. Here’s a list of the cast members who we anticipate will be back for the upcoming 2024 season:
- Ramón Rodríguez as Wilbur “Will” Trent
- Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski
- Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell
- Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood
- Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner
Erika Christensen talked about the future of Will Trent during an interview with TV Line, and she pointed to the chemistry between cast members as the show’s secret weapon.

“A lot of the humor actually comes out of the cases, and a lot of the drama comes out of the personal lives”, she noted. “So even though the cases are really heavy, there’s a workplace humor that people who see it every day have, which I think is fascinating. The humor itself is also really dark, but it’s funny, and that makes [Will Trent] seem really relatable and accessible.”
Is there a Will Trent season 2 trailer?
Sadly, there is not yet a trailer for the upcoming season of Will Trent and it’s very unlikely that we’ll be getting one before the end of the year. Filming on the new season has not yet begun and with the show’s release date still up in the air, there is a very good chance we won’t be getting a trailer for the new season until early 2024.
As soon as a trailer for the season is released, we’ll update this piece with said trailer or promo.
Has Will Trent season 2 started filming yet?
As we previously alluded to, Will Trent will be getting off the ground soon due to the resolution of the actors strike. It’s tough to ascertain a specific start date, especially given how many shows the network has on deck, but the signs of life suggest that it will be sooner rather than later.
Franchises like One Chicago and Law & Order have opened up their writers rooms in recent weeks, which means that new scripts are already being written. In the case of One Chicago, major casting decisions are being made as well.
One Chicago is also being proactive in the sense that crew members have begun prepping the soundstages for all three of its shows, so that once the actors are cleared to go back to work, they can get started on filming right away. It’s a smart tactic, especially now that the strike is officially over. TV Line suggests that the earliest Will Trent and shows like it will resume production is late November or early December.
How many episodes will be in Will Trent season 2?
Will Trent season 1 had 13 episodes, and proved popular enough with fans to get the hallowed renewal from ABC. Generally speaking, shows that start off with a limited run of episodes and get renewed will get an increase episode count closer to 20, but the special circumstances regarding the strike means that this will not be possible for Will Trent season 2.
Based on what TV Line has to say about the production schedules for the rest of ABC slate, its likely that Will Trent season 2 will have between 10-13 episodes. This makes sense, given the condensed period of time the cast and crew will have to work on the show, and the fact that its release window will be limited in comparison to season 1. It’s disappointing, but at the same time, it means season 2 will not be all that different than its predecessor. All that matters is that the quality stay the same!
