After one of the longest summer breaks in the show’s history, Chicago PD finally returns this week with our first new episode in nearly five months!
Needless to say, it’s been a long summer, and it feels like ages ago that season 13 drew to a close, which can make it hard to remember exactly where things left off as the previous season wrapped up. This is especially true considering that the finale left many of the late-season storylines up in the air and unresolved after the final episodes of season 13 put the spotlight on Imani and her sister, Shari, and failed to follow up on storylines set up in the closing episodes of the season.
Of course, the biggest question as we head into the season 14 premiere is what will happen to Shari, but that’s just one of a few key storylines we expect the early episodes to revisit. Before you dive into Chicago PD season 14, here are three key storylines you should remember from the previous season.

Ruzek’s father passed away just as Ruzek and Burgess were moving
One of the most shocking moments to come in the final episodes of the season came with the heartbreaking death of Ruzek’s dad, Bob. Early in the season, it was revealed that Bob’s health was declining, with the storyline used to help explain Patrick John Flueger’s temporary leave early in the season, which resulted in him missing several episodes.
Upon his return, we learned that Ruzek’s dad was trending in a negative direction, with the doctors giving him only a few months to live. His dad sadly passed away in episode 19, and the show failed to really explore the fallout of his death in the final episodes of the season. In fact, the show moved on pretty quickly without even really addressing his dad’s passing at all.
As we enter season 14, we expect that the fallout of losing his father will finally come into play. We also expect that we’ll see more of Burgess and Ruzek's home life as the pair settle into their new home and Makayla settles into her new school. This change in scenery should be a good thing for the family, but we’re sure there will be some growing pains with the move, and we’re hoping the show will showcase a bit more of their personal lives in the new season as they navigate through this change.

Atwater convinced Tasha to move back from Miami so they could give their relationship a real chance
One of the other big storylines that came into play as season 13 came to an end, only to be left on the back burner in the final two episodes, was the latest development on the Atwater and Tasha front.
After learning that Tasha was pregnant, Atwater and Tasha finally had a difficult conversation late in the season about their feelings and the elephant in the room: how they would raise this baby together while living in different cities. Following their conversation, Tasha agreed to move back to Chicago so that she and Atwater could commit to giving their relationship its best chance at flourishing and so they could prepare to co-parent together once their child arrived.
Heading into season 14, we know that the pair will be going strong as the season opens and that their baby will have been born, as teased via a new promo. What we’re eager to see is how LaRoyce Hawkins’ upcoming exit will impact their storyline once the season actually begins.

Imani finally found her sister, but she could be about to lose her again
The central storyline in the final two episodes of Chicago PD season 13 revolved around Imani’s search for her sister, which finally came to an end as she successfully tracked down Shari. Unfortunately, the reunion didn’t exactly play out in the way Imani hoped, though.
While Shari was first seen as a victim, we’d come to learn that she was not as innocent as Imani believed her to be. When they attempted to bring in Kirby, the man who had taken Shari captive years earlier, Shari turned on her sister and would have killed her had Imani not fought back. Shari and Kirby escaped, only to be intercepted by Voight, who took Kirby down, while Shari later attempted suicide upon learning of his death.
Although Shari survived, the finale ended with a major twist: Voight revealed that DNA evidence indicated Shari, not Kirby, was responsible for killing her friend Lila, leaving Imani to question whether her sister would now face a murder charge and possibly be ripped away from her again. We don’t know what Voight will do with this information, but we have a feeling Shari will, at the very least, be heading to a mental health facility to get the help she needs rather than being sent to prison.
We’ll find out what consequences her actions have when Chicago PD season 14 premieres on October 7 at 10/9c on NBC!
