Chicago Fire boss gives exciting update on Severide and Kidd's future

It seems when Chicago Fire season 13 resumes, the writers have a big storyline in store for Severide and Kidd.

Chicago Fire finally returns on Jan. 8 following its winter break and it seems the creative team behind our favorite One Chicago series will soon be revisiting a storyline that many fans worried had been abandoned.

As fans will recall, at the top of Chicago Fire season 13, Severide and Kidd began talking about their future and the beloved couple finally started the conversation fans have been longing for them to have: a discussion about starting a family of their own. It seemed clear that Severide had a desire to start a family and become a dad, but Kidd was understandably not prepared to have a baby. After all, it’s her career which would be impacted the most.

The hope was that the conversation in the season premiere would be the first of many shared between the pair as they explored what starting a family could look like. Instead, the conversation went cold after the premiere leaving fans to wonder whether the discussion would actually go anywhere this season or if it was just wishful thinking.

Well, it seems the creative team very much plans on revisiting that conversation and exploring the conversation of Severide and Kidd starting a family in the second half of the season.

“Soon into the second half of the season, someone from Kidd’s family shows up in Chicago, and the history that is revealed leads Kidd and Severide to restart their conversation about what having their own family means to them,” showrunner Andrea Newman teased to TVLine

While Newman didn’t give an exact timeline of when the conversation might finally start back up, just knowing that the plotline is going to be revisited has us quite excited to see what the writers have planned. Given the tease about the visitor from the past serving as a catalyst to restart the conversation about what starting a family would mean for the pair, we have to wonder if perhaps Kidd has been withholding a piece of information about why she’s hesitant to begin a family and if it has something to do with her parents or childhood.

If that is the case, it’ll be interesting to see how the story unfolds but we’re excited to see Kidd and Severide work through whatever comes their way as they look ahead to their future. Let’s not forget that starting a family can be done in many ways so it’ll be interesting to see if perhaps adoption could come into the mix as a possible option for the pair. We just hope that the conversation doesn’t end up causing a rift between the pair.

Severide and Kidd have been through so much and we’d hope the writers wouldn’t create tension between the two this late in the game over varying opinions on starting a family. While we’d love to see the pair tackle parenthood together, but we can accept them deciding not to become parents. What we can’t accept is them being torn apart over a difference of opinion, so let’s hope that approach isn’t explored!

Chicago Fire airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC and is avaiable to stream via Peacock.
