It's been hard being a Stellaride fan the last few seasons. While the Chicago Fire writers have been keeping fans well fed with amazing storylines for Severide and Kidd, they’ve been toying with our emotions a bit more than we like when it comes to the family front.
Since the couple made the decision to start a family, it’s been a wave of ups and downs with more lows than highs for the pair. In fact, the last two season finales ended with hopeful updates only for the writers to then rip that glimmer of hope right from the fans in the premieres.
The season 13 finale left us really optimistic when Kidd showed Severide a positive pregnancy test only for the season 14 premiere to open with Kidd having lost the baby. Season 14 saw the pair become foster parents to Isaiah, who would return in the season 14 finale to ask to move back in with Severide and Kidd… only for that storyline to be resolved off-screen in the season 15 premiere with Isaiah’s mom moving back to Chicago and him staying with her.
While it’s been a bumpy road (and that’s an understatement) for Kidd and Severide, Chicago Fire’s new showrunner, Victor Teran, has given us hope that Stellaride continue on their journey to becoming parents and starting a family in season 15.
"The question of having children has always been complicated for Stellaride, as it is for many people in the world, but especially for folks whose jobs force them to confront death on a daily basis,” Teran told Matt’s Inside Line. "The issue forces us all to consider not only what we want our lives to look like, but how we feel about where the world is headed. The last thing we want to do is short-shrift such deep, universal questions, and rest assured, Stellaride remain on the journey toward resolving them in season 15."
While Teran didn’t exactly promise us that a Stellaride baby will happen, his update is more optimistic than past comments about the couple’s future.
Although there is no telling where the season ahead might take Kidd and Severide, it’s a relief to know that the writers are still planning on furthering the Stellaride family storyline in the season ahead. What will be interesting to see is how it folds into the narrative of the season as both Severide and Kidd have a lot of new responsibilities at work, which could complicate their family planning.
Severide is already feeling the pressure as the new captain of Firehouse 51, and Kidd has her hands full with the new firefighter candidates she’s training. Those added responsibilities might pump the brakes on starting a family, but perhaps that is when the show might see an opportunity to work in an unplanned pregnancy to shake things up even further for the couple!
Life is full of surprises, and it would create some exciting storytelling opportunities if Kidd were to become pregnant at such a chaotic time in their lives with these new pressures at work. We know Severide is fiercely protective of Kidd, and there is no doubt his protective instincts will go into overdrive once he knows she’s carrying their child. That could create some tension at the firehouse as he struggles to give her the space to keep working in the field until it’s no longer safe for her to do so, which would then create a lot of powerful storylines for Kidd in exploring what pregnancy looks like for a woman in such a physical, male-dominated field.
Regardless of what the plans might be, we just want to see some resolution to this storyline in season 15 and finally get to see Stellaride become parents, whether through adoption, foster care, or the birth of a child. The writers have drawn this storyline out long enough; it’s time to commit and finally take action!
Chicago Fire airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC!
