Da’Vinchi might have been the only new series regular added to the Chicago Fire cast ahead of season 15, but it seems that he might not be the only new addition to stick around for the long haul.
In a recent interview with Give Me My Remote, Chicago Fire showrunner Victor Teran has revealed that there are active conversations about what the future is going to look like for the new group of candidates introduced in the season 15 premiere. While Da’Vinchi’s Marcus Blake might be the only series regular in the candidate pool, Teran made it clear that “they all have the potential to stick around,” though it does sound like there is one character in particular who has a better shot of sticking around for the long haul over the rest in the group.
“I will say one of them more than the others. But I think that it’s likely that we’ll see all of them, as we do when firefighters move into different firehouses. We will keep meeting up with them, and we’ve grown to love all of them. And I think that by the time their time as probies is done, our hope is that the audience has fallen in love with them. And so we’ll keep finding ways to work them in,” Teran teased of the plans for Chicago Fire’s new additions.
Of the new batch of probies, there is indeed one who definitely stands out as the most likely candidate to be the candidate Teran was referencing as having the best shot of sticking around. That would be Matthew Daddario, whose addition to the cast came a bit out of nowhere with no official cast announcement ahead of his debut.
Daddario’s casting in the season was revealed via a social media post from Da’Vinchi, which revealed Daddario had joined the cast as a new firefighter candidate. NBC has yet to officially announce the capacity in which Daddario has joined the cast, though considering he’s already appeared in two episodes and will be featured in the upcoming episodes, this seems to be a bit of a recurring guest star gig—one that seems to have the potential to evolve into something more.
There have been a handful of instances over the years in which an actor has joined a series in the One Chicago franchise in a recurring capacity, only to be promoted to series regular later in the season or the following year. Daniel Kyri was first added as a recurring character but became a favorite among fans and ended up being promoted to series regular the following season and remained on the show as a series regular for years before his eventual exit from the series.
Looking at the first two episodes of the season, there is certainly a big focus on McCaffrey, and it feels like we have a lot to still unpack with the character. Episode 2 revealed he’s a legacy candidate with deep roots in the CFD and a dad who is a state senator; that is a well-established backstory that still has plenty of untapped potential. Fans are loving Daddario’s character so far, and we imagine they would love to see him stick around at the firehouse beyond just a few episodes, so hopefully when the probies wrap their time at Firehouse 51, there might be a place for both Burke and McCaffrey at the firehouse!
Chicago Fire airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
