Heading into the Chicabgo Fire season 15 premiere, fans were bracing for cast exits ever since they were announced during the summer break. There were several surprising twists during episode 1 that both set up some upcoming departures and established an unexpected loss, leaving fans surprised.
Interestingly enough, not a single one of the show’s departing characters was killed. When one considers the deadly circumstances they faced during the season 14 finale—a dangerous
warehouse fire and a window blow-out—it's kind of amazing that no one dies with the exception of a set of civilians, whose passing becomes a major plot point as the local Chicago media tries to figure
out what was wrong during Engine 51’s rescue.
Audiences have been wondering how the series was going to write out Joe Cruz, and it turns out Chicago Fire hasn't chosen to kill him off—yet. Instead, an injury while rescuing those aforementioned civilians from the warehouse fire has placed him in a wheelchair, coping with partial paralysis and permanently sidelining him from the fire department and paving the way for his exit storyline.

Meanwhile, Dermot Mulroney's tortured tenure as Dominic Pascal came to an end with a whimper and him leaving town to take a job with another fire department, a foregone conclusion after he managed to fumble his career with the CFD after reacting impulsively during the city’s last pandemic (and OneChi’s latest mass crossover). He worked with Kelly Severide one more time to try to protect Cruz after a probie regarding his conduct at the fire that injured him arose. Pascal is now officially gone, and the character—and his impact—will sadly and quickly be forgotten after two seasons of the show’s desperate attempts at making the character work.
A surprising departure also occurred during episode 1, and it happened entirely off-screen. After teasing that he'd move in with Severide and his wife Stella Kidd, their foster son Isaiah instead
chooses to stay with his mother, a situation that was handled with brief dialogue. Since he ran away to see them and be with them during the season 14 finale, the plot twist makes little sense. With the One Chicago world always being as volatile as it is, these exits might not be permanent—or even occur permanently at all. Time will definitely tell the ultimate tale.
