4 Chicago Fire characters we might say goodbye to in season 15

Some Chicago Fire characters have been confirmed to return for season 15, but we could still lose others who were put in danger in the season 14 finale.

Chicago Fire fans know the deal by now after well over a decade of watching the show. It's not a season finale if you're not worried about one or more of your favorite characters. Well, the season 14 finale went ahead and significantly upped the ante by putting almost the entire Firehouse 51 squad directly in the literal line of fire and leaving their lives on the line.

Thankfully, the Chicago Fire season 14 finale confirmed that at least Pascal, Violet, and Novak were safe, and a report ahead of the episode revealed that Taylor Kinney and Miranda Rae Mayo signed new deals to reprise their roles as Severide and Kidd for the fifteenth season. That leaves much of the cast and characters unaccounted for going into the next season.

As fans are naturally inclined to do, many have been theorizing which characters could be killed off or written off when Chicago Fire season 15 picks up after the season 14 cliffhanger. But knowing that five characters are 100 percent safe, there are still an extra handful in danger. We're looking at four characters who could be in the worst position to say goodbye in the fall.

Herrmann

Since the season 14 finale aired on NBC, one of the leading fan theories that have been circulating on social media and the internet revolves around the possibility that Herrmann's time could be up. The theory actually has a number of interesting points that could very well lead to his tragic death.

Herrmann took on a large role in the season 14 finale as he and Cindy prepared to renew their vows. The sweet ceremony happened just before the team took on the brutal call that led to the majority of the squad being engulfed on a ball of flames. But Herrmann also mentioned retirement.

During a conversation with Mouch, he revealed that he had been thinking about hanging up his hat, and this mere mention, along with the focus on his vow renewal, seemed to hint to certain fans that this could be Herrmann's swan song. Was the season 14 finale foreshadowing his death?

It's hard to say what could happen in the season 15 premiere when we don't know the extent of what the team's up against. We saw the explosion, the team in the building getting trapped, and the team running from the roof getting hit with flames. Who knows if Herrmann makes a dangerous decision.

Chicago Fire - Season 14 - Joe Minoso as Cruz

Cruz

Another original character who's on the chopping block is Cruz. He's part of the team that's trapped inside the burning building, and while Severide has been confirmed safe due to Kinney's deal to return, the others inside the building don't have the same safety net just yet.

The Chicago Fire season 14 fianle didn't feature foreshadowing and irony for just Herrmann. As the episode led up to the fatal accident on the call, each of the characters had huge stakes back at home that would be devastating if they were to be killed while on the job. It was a bittersweet way for the show to establish would they would be losing if they didn't survive.

Cruz and his wife Chloe learned that she's pregnant with twins, which is life-changing news before heading out on a potentially life-changing call. It would be particularly cruel for Chicago Fire to kill Cruz off while his wife is expecting twins, but you can never say never.

Mouch

The last of the original characters in this batch, Chicago Fire managed to also cleverly set up potential heartbreak for Mouch just in case he doesn't make it. Along with Severide, Cruz, Capp, and Tony, (Capp and Tony being two other characters we could be saying goodbye to), Mouch was also part of the team that ends up trapped inside the building.

In the later episodes of season 14, Mouch was pursuing writing a book about his experiences with Herrmann. It's already written and his publisher decided to not follow through with the book, instead opting for a steamy romance novel that Mouch had also penned.

But would could hit us more in the feels if Mouch, another character that had retirement rolling around in his brain, ends up losing his life on this call and Herrmann ends up publishing his book in his honor? Again, this would be incredibly devastating for the whole team and the fans considering Mouch has been a fixture on the show since season 1, but it's on the table.

Chicago Fire - Season 14 - Brandon Larracuente as Sal Vasquez

Vasquez

The final most pressing option for the characters in most danger is season 14's newest hire Sal Vasquez. When he joined the team, he was a hothead that wasn't really quick at making friends. But he proved himself as a vital member of the team, and now he's in danger.

In the season 14 finale, Vasquez was part of the team rushing down the ladder to get away from the explosion, and since he was with Kidd, you would think that he would be marked safe since she's confirmed to be back in season 15. However, we have to remember, he's a risk taker.

Vasquez started to become pulled closer to following his old dream of becoming a police officer, and while he wrote it off to stay dedicated to firefighting, his prowess while doing a trial at the police academy showed that he was still very much conflicted about which path he should take.

That's all to say that Vasquez is drawn to being a hero. It's like him to run into the building to save the team trapped inside and end up sacrificing his own life. He wouldn't think twice. But would that really be satisfying to fans after only knowing him for one season? Vasquez needs a new direction instead.
