Leading into the Chicago Fire season 14 season finale, anticipation reached a fever pitch after the penultimate episode wrapped up Severide's long Internal Affairs investigation storyline and paved the way for him to move forward. We were left with questions about what he might choose to do next in his career at Firehouse 51 or possibly taking on a new role somewhere else.

Before the finale, we were also on the edge of our seats about whether Vasquez could be looking to pursue a different line of work, what happens with Mouch's book about him and Herrmann, and whether there will be a shocking death. But there's also the Severide and Kidd welcoming a "surprise visitor" and a very special vow renewal going down in the season 14 finale.

Chicago Fire season 14 episode 21 begins with a flash forward to three days into the future as the teams faces a dangerous call. Rewinding the clock, Herrmann's stress mounts, and Cindy helps bring him back to reality. He drops to one knee and proposes to renew their vows. After everything they have been through 32 years in, she agrees to celebrate their marriage.

Fifty-eight hours before the call that has the team running to safety before a roof collapses, Kidd and Stellaride lie in bed and ponder the decision Severide will make about his future. When he asks what she thinks, she says that it's about what he wants and she will support his choice. He has three days to decide whether he will stay at Firehouse 51 or take the job at arson investigation.

Herrmann and Cindy plan a vow renewal at Molly's

Violet, Novak, and Vasquez walk into work having a playful conversation, but they're interrupted when Vasquez's dad drives up for a surprise drop-in. He's disappointed the Vasquez canceled his meeting with PD's training commander. He pushes Vasquez to reschedule the meeting as a favor since Mottola helped him out. Vasquez agrees to take the meeting.

While Severide gets called into an unexpected meeting, Cruz expresses his concerns about having another baby and Herrmann announces that he and Cindy are renewing their vows at Molly's before breaking ground on rebuilding their house. Suddenly, we're up to 36 hours before the call, and Severide meets with Chief Pascal, who he's surprised to see. Pascal urges him to turn down the OFI job and informs him that his promotion to captain went through.

Violet and Novak help Cindy plan the vow renewal party at Molly's, and Cindy wants the them of the party to be "gratitude." That's very broad, but Violet pitches a gratitude wall for guest to share their personal photos. Mouch receives a call from the publisher he sent his book proposal to and wants to talk about Brother in Arms in person. However, they want the version without Herrmann.

Severide and Kidd still go back and forth on his decision and find Isaiah touring one of the engines with Vasquez. Lydia dropped him off and will be staying with a friend, so Isaiah will be staying back hom with Severide and Kidd. When Cruz gets home, he finds Chloe in pain and worrying about the baby. We're now 18 hours away from the call as Cruz and Chloe learn that the bleeding she's experiencing is actually due to twins. It's a surprise announcement, but the babies are healthy.

The real reason Isaiah's back in Chicago

Back at home, Isaiah gives his two cents about Severide's decision, but Kidd finds it curious that he dropped by without calling them even though she just visited him. Severide writes it off as a last-minute trip. Mouch tries his best to pitch his version of his book, but his publisher wants him to publish Sheets on Fire, a romance novel he sent in almost a decade ago under a pen name.

Violet and Novak place their photos on the gratitude wall, Novak's of her siblings and Violet's of Evan. She pushes Novak to pursue a relationship with Vasquez and not waste a second. During his meeting at the police department, Vasquez is given the opportunity to jump right in with the current training class and does exactly so. He proves his strengths as a cop on the training course.

Now 14 hours before the call, Severide dresses Isaiah in his suit for the vow renewal. Isaiah tells him that if he took the job with OFI, he wouldn't have to worry about dying every day. Kidd reveals that Lydia's still in Cleveland and didn't know he was in Chicago. Isaiah admits that his mom can't take care of him anymore and he will have to live with Lydia. But he doesn't want to live with Lydia. He wants to return to Chicago and live with Severide and Kidd. Could an adoption happen?

Isaiah's mom still wants to be in his life, but she feels as though she can barely take care of herself. Even though Lydia loves him, he would rather return to Chicago. They're willing to take him in, but only after making that decision with his mother. They plan to visit her in Cleveland after the party and their next shift.

The whole team's fate is left up in the air

During the vow renewal party, Novak asks Vaquez how his meeting with the deputy chief went and he waxes poetic how it felt like living his dream. He flirts with her, and she admits that if they got together, it would be more than just "fun" for her. Kidd admits that if Isaiah returns to live with them, taking the job with OFI might be the better choice for him and their family.

Herrmann and Cindy's vow renewal is much more emotional than either of them expected. After the party, we're officially almost caught up with the countdown as the team mounts the roof of a building. Herrmann worries when he hears a sound, and the team inside sounds distressed. We're back to 30 minutes before the call as Herrmann admits to Mouch that he's thinking about retiring.

Mouch also admits that their book won't be published. Herrmann supports him taking the romance novel paycheck and use the money to publish Brothers in Arms himself. Before Severide can give his decision to Pascal, the team is whisked away on the call. Throughout the episode, there has been a lot of foreshadowing and many characters have been set up with high-stakes decisions.

Pascal joins the team on the call to assist, and it's complicated getting through the storage facility to the smoke. Severide, Cruz, Mouch, Capp, and Tony go inside the building while Kidd leads Vasquez, Herrmann, and Ballard on the roof. While masking up, Herrmann gets worried. The team inside searched for the fire and hear a loud boom.

While they put their loves at risk, we catch glimpes of their loved ones at home none the wiser. Isaish packs his bag for their trip but leaves a shirt in his drawer. The team inside has no visibility while the team on the roof rushes off before it collapses. When the team reaches the fire, it explodes directly into them and the team scaling the ladder. The team is trapped and everyone's lives are on the line.
