Chicago Fire fans are in for a blast from the past, but not in the literal sense. As much as we have been wishing for Jesse Spencer to reprise his role as Matthew Casey after leaving in season 10, he hasn't been confirmed to return just yet. But one of the show's newest firefighters will have long-time fans reminded of Casey's dynamic with the one and only Kelly Severide.
Earlier this summer, Chicago Fire season 15 was confirmed to have a new series regular on its roster with Da'Vinchi joining the cast as firefighter candidate Marcus Burke. In the most recently released teaser for the upcoming season premiere, NBC gave us our first look at Da'Vinchi's new character alongside fellow newcomer Matthew Daddario, who's playing another firefighter candidate.
Before the new season arrives on Oct. 7, Chicago Fire's new showrunner Victor Teran spoke with TV Line to offer some hints about what fans can expect from the latest season. Beyond talking about the season 14 cliffhanger and the incoming exit of Joe Miñoso, Teran elaborated on how these events will clash with Firehouse 51's new additions and have fans pleasantly reminded of the good old days.
According to the showrunner, one of the leading members of the team will suddenly become responsible for a group of firefighter candidates, which includes Da'Vinchi's Marcus Burke and Daddario's currently unnamed character. Just like when Vasquez was introduced last season, Burke will enter the team with an attitude that's not going to mesh with everyone on the squad.
In fact, Teran admitted that Burke was specifically written as a foil for one of the show's established characters. He will be "the oil to somebody's water" in the same way that when Chicago Fire first made its premiere on NBC, Severide and Casey were not the best of friends. They were constantly in conflict given their polar opposite personalities at the time, making it hard to work together.
Obviously, over the years, Severide and Casey's relationship developed and they were able to settle their differences, forming a real friendship and becoming an unstoppable duo on the team. We're going to be seeing double in season 15 as a new duo takes shape, and before we have even met Marcus Burke, we already have a guess as to who his firehouse frenemy will be.
Seeing as they are in a similar age group, it's not unfounded that Burke would arrive and not only annoy everyone' a little bit, but specifically annoy Vasquez in a significant way. In season 14, Vasquez joined the team with his own brand of headstrong confidence. Although Vasquez was more closed off than Burke seems to be, he was still the new kid on the block with something to prove.
Now that he's no longer the newest member of the team, it's not unfounded to assume that Vasquez could see the possibility of Burke landing a job at the firehouse full time as a threat, leading to something of a rivalry (a heated one, if you will). If they are able to capture the exciting, kinetic energy between Severide and Casey that drove much of the show's first season, we're in for a real treat.
Chicago Fire season 15 will have two self-assured young men working to prove themselves to their leaders, and there's no doubt that Kidd, Severide, and other members of the team will have to reel them in. Hopefully, if Vasquez and Burke really do butt heads, their relationship will be explored throughout season 15 as we dig in and get to know that show's newest complicated pairing.
