Chicago Fire season 14 went out with quite the bang with a cliffhanger that left the lives of nearly every member of 51 up in the air. It was a moment that left fans speechless and spiraling over the idea of one of their favorite characters not making it out of the ordeal, and there is no denying fans will be talking about the cliffhanger all summer long.
Before the finale turned our world upside down, though, it featured some major moments, including a surprise vow renewal between Herrmann and Cindy. After everything they’ve been through this season, Herrmann wanted to celebrate their love by renewing their vows in front of all of their family and friends. After his surprise proposal, Cindy tagged in Violet and Novak to help plan the renewal ceremony, which ended up taking place at Molly’s with quite the unique theme: gratitude.
As part of the theme, Violet came up with the idea of a gratitude wall where all of the guests could bring a photo of friends or family members they’re thankful for.
When the vow renewal ceremony rolled around, we got a glimpse of the wall of gratitude during the festivities, which featured a few familiar faces, including a photo of Chief Boden, which the camera was sure to pan in on briefly during the montage.
It was not made clear who placed the photo of Boden on the wall, and we sadly did not get to see Boden appear in the flesh in the episode; however, it was a sweet tribute and a fun “cameo” of sorts to have Boden’s presence be felt in the episode.
Boden's photo could have been placed on the wall by literally anyone at 51 as he was a leader that made an impact on the lives of each and every member of the Firehouse 51 family. He was more than just their trusted leader; he was a mentor and a friend who helped to guide them each on their journeys and mold them into the firefighters and paramedics they are today.
While it would have been nice to see Boden back in the episode for a cameo, we understand why the show did not bring him back in the finale for a quick cameo. Sure, this would have been fun, but the fans deserve for Boden's next appearance on the series to be via a role that gives him a strong storyline, not a brief scene.
Hopefully, the photo cameo was a tease that the show is looking to bring Boden back into the mix for season 15. We know that Eamonn Walker was on the set at one point in season 14 catching up with the cast and crew, so hopefully that set visit might spark inspiration to bring him back as a guest star in season 15 or perhaps even in a larger role.
Although uncommon for the One Chicago franchise, we have seen characters leave and come back before, most notably with Jessy Schram's Dr. Hannah Asher. After joining the cast in season 5, Schram exited the show in the season 6 premiere before returning late in season 7.
Fans would certainly love to see Boden back on Chicago Fire, and we can only hope that the new showrunner will find a way to make it happen in season 15!
