Throughout its long run on NBC, Chicago Fire has had its fair share of comings and goings. More characters than we can count on two hands have come through Firehouse 51, and while some of these have been more beloved than others, it's always tough to see a member of the squad go.
Chicago Fire season 14 introduced a number of new characters, including Sal Vasquez and Lucy Zambetti, and marked the second season featuring the firehouse's new chief, Dom Pascal. However, one of these characters was seemingly written out of the series in such a casual way that you might not have realized that they probably won't be back in season 15.
Unfortunately, in Chicago Fire season 14 episode 20, Lucy (Jeanine Mason) was fired by Chief Hopkins, which appeared to signal that we have seen the last of her on the show. Since her arrival in season 14, fans had been enjoying the administrative assistant character, likely due to Mason's performance, but her underwhelming exit squanders the potential she could have had.

While getting to know Lucy in her limited amount of time in Chicago Fire season 14, we ultimately learned the dark secret that she had been keeping that connected her to Chief Hopkins. In the past, she had been involved in a car accident and was intoxicated. Despite her role in the car accident and the state she was in, Lucy didn't serve any jail time but continues to feel guilty.
She's a character that, in spite of dangerous and reckless choices she might have made in the past, always tries to do the right thing. Lucy pulls CFD files in order to help Severide in his investigation and point toward the cover-up that happened with his father in a watch theft. Her role in pulling these files and supplying Severide with them led to her job being terminated.
What's probably the most frustrating part of Lucy getting fired is how low key it is. Hopkins simply lets her go on the spot since she went over his head to obtain the files. Obviously, she betrayed trust and followed through with something that she didn't have the clearance to do, but even if she had good intentions to help Severide, that doesn't matter at the end of the day.
Rules are rules and trust is trust, and once either or both are broken, it's hard to come back from that. In the grand scheme of things, Lucy leaving Chicago Fire likely doesn't impact fans as much as if a long-running character like Severide, Kidd, Herrmann, Mouch, or Cruz were to leave, but it's still a bummer that an exciting new character played by a great performer was written off just like that.
Perhaps there's a way for Lucy to come back to Firehouse 51 at some point in season 15. We know that there will be some big changes headed our way next season as the season 14 cliffhanger teased that nearly the entire team's life hangs in the balance. We'll have to find out if there will be any major departures before we begin to plot a way for Lucy to come back into the fold.
