Promotion for season 15 of Chicago Fire is ramping up, and the show's actors have begun to drop hints about what lies ahead for everyone's favorite fearless firefighters. Hanako Greensmith, who plays Violet Mikami on the drama, recently sat down for an interview where she revealed that two upcoming actor exits—Dermot Mulroney's Dominic Pascal and long-time series veteran Joe Minoso as Joe Cruz—will be handled with sensitivity. And yes, the audience will be given some extra time to say goodbye to both characters.
“You will still have some time with [Mulroney’s Pascal] before his departure. It feels like a nice passing of the baton. I think that’ll be exciting to see who’s stepping into his place, at least for the interim. We’re going to have some exciting changes there,” she told TV Insider.
Similarly, of Minoso, she said, "And then as far as Cruz goes, so much beautiful story’s being written to acknowledge him in a completely different way. And I think there’s going to be a lot of growth for his character and his story. And I really, really hope that his departure leaves people as touched as it will touch us.”
There are plenty of things both said and unsaid in Greensmith’s comments that hint toward Cruz and Pascal’s futures. ChiFire fans were left dangling off the edge of a cliffhanger when season 14 wrapped up, after all.
51 and many of its best and brightest were at the scene of a major building fire, which left Cruz in peril along with most of his colleagues when it flared up. Pascal was standing outside when things became dire and seemed prepared to charge into the fray, which likely marks him safe from death or anything tragic happening to him. Judging from Greensmith’s comments, it seems likely that Pascal will live to pass the torch, so to speak, to Severide—or, more likely, to the new chief the show’s been looking to add on via casting calls recently.
It seems that Pascal will continue to stay outside of the flames per Greensmith’s comments—but Minoso’s exit might be a more tragic, thought-provoking one, judging by what she had to say. Since
Joe and his wife are about to add twin girls to their family—a brood that already includes their bio son Brian and adopted son Javi—there's definitely a dangling sense of danger hovering over poor Joe.
Since Greensmith mentions his exit story will spark growth in other characters and be a touching tribute to everything he’s meant to 51 throughout the years, it seems likely he’ll be the biggest victim of the fire. The show’s crew have already been seen filming an episode while wearing their dress blues, which hints that someone on the team is going to meet with death thanks to the disaster. With old members of the squad—such as Yuriy Sardarov’s Otis—promising to return for the show’s 300th episode festivities, only time will tell if they arrive to celebrate something wonderful—or have returned to say goodbye to someone who’s deeply beloved by the team.
