Season 10 has been a season of change for Chicago Med in many ways. This season we’ve seen a few new faces entering the mix both behind and in front of the camera, which has honestly led to one of the show’s strongest seasons to date.
Creatively, the show has been churning out some amazing storylines this season not only for the show’s veteran cast members but also the season’s newest additions: Caitlin Lenox and John Frost. These two new characters are truly unlike any we’ve seen on the show in the past with backstories unlike any we’ve seen before which has helped make the two characters immediately stand out among the audiences.
Frost, in particular, has a storyline that is fresh and has opened the door for some fun storylines already this season as a former child star turned doctor. Through the initial episodes of the season, we’ve gotten to peel back the layers on the character with his celebrity and child star fame being used as the brunt of the joke on many occasions; however, this backstory has also informed the doctor that he is: one that is a strong advocate for his young patients and who treats them with the same respect as adult patients.
It’s been hinted that a part of what has made Frost such a strong advocate for his younger patients is that he didn’t always have that same advocacy from the adults in his life growing up, which has made him even more protective of the kids he treats. These subtle hints have not been lost on the fans who have been eager to know whether the show might be planning to finally introduce us to Frost’s family this season and provide more answers to the questions introduced.
Well, it seems this is a conversation the creative team is presently having with showrunner Allen MacDonald revealing to TVLine that there have been conversations about introducing Frost’s family in the show’s current season.
“That remains to be seen, but we have talked about it. I guess the answer is, ‘I’m not sure yet,’ but I will have to decide that very, very soon,” MacDonald teased.
It’s a positive sign that conversations about introducing Frost’s family this season are being had and we imagine it’s a difficult decision to make. On one hand, as fans, we want that quicker payoff to know more about the relationship Frost has with his family – and particularly his parents – but on the other hand we did only just meet Frost this season so holding back on the introduction on his family would make sense. Waiting to play the family card would allow the show to continue to drop subtle updates as it’s been doing this season which could make the payoff more rewarding when the time comes to finally pull back the curtain and give us further insights into his relationship with his family via an actual appearance on-screen.
The arrival of Frost’s family could actually make for a brilliant season 11 storyline, assuming Frost will remain a part of the cast which we most certainly hope will be the case. It’d give us the chance to continue to get to know more about Frost via more subtle storylines this season before coming face to face with the family who shaped him into the doctor he’s become next season.
That timeline also would help the audience to further invest in the character, making the moment even more rewarding when it finally happens and the last pieces of the puzzle are put into place. Of course, that’s not to say we wouldn’t love to meet his family sometime this season, but we’re willing to wait if the writers choose not to explore that storyline before season 10 comes to a close.
