Keeping in line with how the series has always operated for over a decade, Chicago Med season 11 will continue to keep us on our toes. And we're not just talking about the twists and turns that are still to come ahead of the impending season finale. We're also talking about the surprise character return that's on the way when the One Chicago shows return from their brief hiatus on April 1.
It's been a big season for Dr. Charles as his arc has been long hinting a real change of pace for the veteran psychiatrist. Since the season began, he's been pondering the possibility of retirement, a concept that has been suggested to him by various friends. Charles has also experienced some serious mental health struggles in Chicago Med season 11, which continue in episode 16.
Dr. Charles' daughter returns in Chicago Med season 11 episode 16
In the next new episode, Charles' season-long storyline appears to come to a head. He can no longer outrun the mental health troubles that found him all over again after working for the suicide hotline. The trailer for the episode, which is titled "The Book of Charles," finds the doctor going through a crisis of his own. His youngest daughter, Anna, even returns for the first time in season 11.
As the official synopsis for Chicago Med season 11 episode 16 reveals, he has reached a breaking point that has been steadily building for the entirety of the season: "Dr. Charles grapples with his own mental health following a harrowing experience working the suicide prevention line."
While we weren't expecting to see Anna back this season, it makes sense that she would be by her dad's side as he goes through similar struggles she faced last season. The two-part Chicago Med season 10 finale found Charles confronting the reality of Anna's admittance as a patient following her suicide attempt. She hasn't appeared in the show in a meaningful way since her recovery, so season 11 episode 16 will give us a long-awaited update on Anna while also finding her supporting her dad.
If the emotionally charged trailer for the upcoming episode is anything to go on, Charles will definitely going to need support. Last week's episode found Charles working alongside Theo on another case while also juggling his latest work with the suicide hotline. On top of what he's experience with these cases, he was also approached by Howie to take over his place in his teaching position.
Naturally, Howie's proposition and Charles' intention to consider it gives Chicago Med an actual exit strategy for his character. Nothing has been made official just yet, but season 11 has been hinting that Charles could be potentially leaving Gaffney. It's been a big question mark surrounding him, but he hasn't made any decisions. Could that be changing in episode 16?
Perhaps that's the role that Anna will be playing in this episode, being an advocate for Charles taking an actual step back from his work in the emergency room and in the field with patients and taking his career to the classroom. If his successful mentorship of interns earlier this season means anything, Charles still has a lot of great work in him, and that's inspiring the next generation.
Tune into Chicago Med season 11 episode 16 on Wednesday, April 1 at 8/7c on NBC to catch up with Anna and find out what's next for Dr. Charles!
