It seems a familiar adversary will be checking back into Gaffney Chicago Medical Center this fall when Chicago Med season 12 begins, not that we’re at all surprised.
With the returns of the One Chicago shows inching closer and closer, NBC has ramped up its promotional efforts, which have included a wave of new activity on the official One Chicago social media accounts. We’ve been getting a lot of great content lately, including some new spots teasing the franchise’s return, which have given fans a look behind the scenes.
On September 7, the One Chicago account marked the occasion of being one month away from the premieres by sharing a fun reel featuring the casts of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD tagged with the caption “That feeling when One Chicago returns in ONE MONTH.” The video wove together some clips from the shows’ sets as the cast goofed around and took a break between filming, and it was buried in this reel that we received confirmation of Orlagh Cassidy’s return for season 12.
Cassidy first joined the show in season 10 as Gaffney Chicago Medical Center board member Miranda Lewis and has become a key recurring character since her introduction. More often than not, she’s proven to be an adversary to S. Epatha Merkerson’s Sharon Goodwin, with the pair often finding themselves at odds over hospital policy and decision-making.
This was indeed the case as season 11 came to an end with Miranda making it clear to Goodwin that her time at Gaffney was over. As Goodwin and Charles made their way to a board meeting scheduled to vote on whether Theo would be put into place as the permanent head of the psychiatry department following his run as interim head when Charles was recovering from his near-death experience, Miranda stopped the pair to share a surprising update: Theo had removed his name from the position for personal reasons.
Miranda informed Charles that the board would like him to resume his position at the head of the Department of Psychiatry before turning her attention to Goodwin. Much to Goodwin’s shock, Miranda informed her that while Charles would remain in place in his position, Goodwin was to leave the hospital. Miranda made it clear to Goodwin this was her chance to leave the hospital without it becoming a battle, as she accused her of leaking Theo’s medical records to the board, telling Goodwin to leave within the hour.
Goodwin then made it clear to Miranda that she doesn’t frighten easily and wasn’t going to go down without a fight, setting up one of the season’s biggest cliffhangers. Given how season 11 ended, we anticipated that Miranda might be back at the top of the season as the show explores the fallout of that season-ending moment between the two, but her return was never officially confirmed until now.
Interestingly, we know that a time jump is coming at the top of the season, so it will be interesting to see what Miranda’s presence means. Did she succeed in pushing Goodwin out, or was it an empty threat? We don’t quite know what the outcome might be, but we know that Goodwin is not going anywhere and that things will be quite icy between her and Charles as the season opens. It’ll be interesting to see if Goodwin was forced to take a temporary leave or if nothing came of her potential actions – after all, we don’t know whether it was actually Goodwin who leaked the records – but it seems that no matter the outcome, Charles and Goodwin will have had a falling out as a result of the drama Miranda helped to cause in attempting to oust Charles in favor of Theo.
Thankfully, we’re now less than a month away from Chicago Med’s return and will find out soon enough what the future holds for Goodwin and what brings Miranda back into the fold.
