Since Allen MacDonald took over as showrunner of Chicago Med, he’s quickly won over the fans not only through the incredible storylines he’s helped to weave into the show’s narrative and honored the legacy of the show but also for keeping it real with the fans. Sure, he’s stirred the pot on a few occasions to keep fans guessing about the outcome of a storyline, but when he’s promised a moment, he actually follows through with fulfilling the promise. And when he’s been unable to make something happen, it’s often because the timing simply wasn’t right at that moment and he didn’t want to make something feel forced.
A perfect example of this came just last season when there were plans to bring Hannah’s sister, Lizzy, back for an episode of season 11. As MacDonald revealed over the summer break, Erin Anderson had actually returned to the show and filmed a new scene for one episode in season 11, but they ultimately chose to cut the scene from the final episode as they felt that it failed to push the narrative forward and simply replayed a vibe they had already seen on the show.
“We even brought Lizzy back for an episode this season but we cut her out because of time, but also because it was a scene between her and Archer actually, it wasn’t with Hannah. The reason we cut it out, or I cut it out, was because I felt like we were playing a vibe that we had already seen before with Hannah, and that the next time we see Lizzy, I want it to feel different,” MacDonald revealed of the cut scene.
While it didn’t make sense to bring Lizzy back in season 11 via the planned storyline, MacDonald made it clear that his intentions were to delve back into that story in season 12 and it seems he’s going to be fulfilling that promise to fans.
In a new interview with ScreenRant, actress Jessy Schram, who plays Hannah Asher on Chicago Med, confirmed that there are plans to bring Lizzy back in season 12 for what she expects will be a heavy meetup.
“I think that we can very much expect to see Hannah's sister Lizzy come back. I don't know to what degree that reconciliation or rehab of the relationship will be, but I know that there are plans to have Lizzy back, and I think that that's going to be a really interesting and incredibly dynamic and heavy meetup, whatever that might look like,” Schram teased.
One strong possibility is that Lizzy will return in the planned “Book of Asher” episode that is planned for this season, which will center around Hannah and follow the lead of the “Book of Charles” and the “Book of Archer,” in telling a very personal story in which Schram appears in every scene of the episode. It would make sense for that episode to finally explore the fallout of Hannah and Lizzy’s falling out after Lizzy lashed out at Hannah and stormed out on her upon learning that Hannah could not be her surrogate because she was pregnant with her own child.
Now that Hannah has become a mother, it’ll be interesting to see where the pair stand and if Lizzy has changed her perspective and seen the error in her ways. That’s a really interesting story we want to see played out, and we’re glad the writers are planning on addressing the sisters’ relationship at some point this season.
Even if Lizzy’s return does not come in “The Book of Asher,” we just hope the writers give the character a big moment in her return episode rather than weaving her return in via a quick scene. There is a lot of emotional baggage to unpack between the sisters, and we want to see that unfold in a way that doesn’t feel rushed or glossed over.
Chicago Med airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC.
