Chicago Med just quietly broke up yet another couple (but this time off screen)

Ahead of the Chicago Med season 11 finale, the penultimate episode included the breakup of a key couple, but we didn't actually see it happen.

Going into the Chicago Med season 11 finale, there are still so many loose ends to untangle. In the season's penultimate episode, all hell broke loose at Gaffney when prisoners from a local prison riot arrive and a Code Silver is later called when one escapes. In the middle of the chaos, Asher goes into labor, a couple says "I love you" for the first time, and another couple calls it quits.

Well, actually, the couple that broke up did so off camera. As Archer explains to his son Sean, Jennifer broke up him, which cuts their relationship incredibly short. Their breakup happens off screen, so don't think that you missed an episode or a scene. In fact, we barely had enough time to even watch the couple interact much after the painstaking process of them getting together.

Archer reveals the breakup news to Sean when he asks how Jennifer has been handling the impending arrival of Archer and Asher's baby girl. The beginning of their relationship featured tension over Jennifer's worries about Archer and Asher's closeness. And as it turns out, that's exactly what caused their breakup, paving the way for a potential new romance to rise.

Archer and Jennifer broke up in Chicago Med season 11 episode 20

As Archer explains to his son, Jennifer broke up with him due to the fact that she believed he had romantic feelings for Asher. Sean pushes his father to be honest with Asher and admit that he's in love with her. Archer even tries to do as much when he attempts to pull Asher away for a conversation, but she's busy with a patient and doesn't have time to talk.

Honestly, it's no wonder that Chicago Med opted to conclude the Archer and Jennifer storyline off screen. It's not really a relationship that most fans were emotionally invested in, and for the most part, we could tell that it really only acted as a speed bump on the way to whatever would eventually develop between Archer and Asher when their baby is born.

But it's still something of a bummer that a seemingly major development in a main character's life didn't play out on screen for viewers to watch. Since we didn't see the breakup happen, that could potentially lead to some closure happening in the future in season 12. After all, Jennifer remains a key part of the Gaffney staff and will continue to pop up in episodes here and there.

The trailer for the Chicago Med season 11 finale shows Asher delivering her baby and Archer being held at gunpoint. Perhaps both of these life-changing events will lead to them being honest with each other about how they feel and possibly becoming an official couple. After all, nothing will bring them closer than co-parenting a newborn baby, and those emotions could inspire real romance.

As for romance happening in Gaffney, we narrowly avoided another breakup that for sure would have happened on screen. Lenox and Ripley's relationship reached a breaking point when he discovered the truth about her diagnosis. But in the season's penultimate episode, Lenox admitted that she's in love with him. If one couple can confess their love, then maybe another can.
