Since Allen MacDonald took over as Chicago Med’s showrunner in season 10, he’s done a brilliant job reinvigorating the show through unexpected storytelling that has led to some incredible storylines for our favorite characters. A perfect example of this came in season 11, episode 6, "The Story of Us,” when the show introduced an unexpected secret about the Goodwin family.
As Bert’s health began declining, his three children came to be by his side in his final hours. This included Bert and Sharon’s oldest son, David, who had previously only been mentioned on the show. In making his debut, we learned that David, Bert, and Sharon had been hiding a major secret as we came to learn that Bert was not David’s biological father.
We came to learn that Sharon was already pregnant when she first met Bert in nursing school. When Bert asked Sharon on a date to the movies, she came clean to him about being pregnant, expecting that he would walk away; however, Bert made it clear it didn’t matter to him and the date would be the first chapter in their complicated love story.
When David was a teen, Sharon and Bert let him know the truth about his biological father and allowed him the space to decide how and when he’d tell his younger siblings. David ultimately chose to keep the secret, carrying the burden alone, which led to a rift between him and his family.
The plot twist was one that no Chicago Med fan saw coming, and it left fans with more than a few questions. The biggest question on the minds of fans was the identity of David’s biological father, who we learned little about when the secret came out. The only thing the show informed us about David’s biological father was that he had no interest in Sharon after learning she was planning on keeping the baby.
Chicago Med may be about to introduce the father of Goodwin’s oldest son
After dropping the truth bomb on us early in the season about David’s biological father, the show moved the storyline to the back burner. However, it appears we’re about to finally revisit the storyline when season 11 resumes on April 22, and it looks like the show might be about to introduce David’s biological father.
Although there is no mention of Sharon’s storyline in the episode synopsis or promo, newly released photos from the episode hint we’re going to possibly get the answers we’ve been looking for regarding the identity of David’s father.
In the first photo, we see Sharon and David sitting together in her office at Gaffney in the midst of what appears to be a heart-to-heart conversation. Sharon is seen sitting next to David in her office, gently resting her hand on his arm with a reassuring look on her face. The scene on its own doesn’t offer up much context, but when you pair this scene with another photo from the episode, a picture begins to be painted through the newly released photos.
A second photo from the episode (below) sees an older gentleman played by legendary actor Scott Lawrence sitting on the arm of the couch in Sharon’s office. This mystery character is a man named Spencer, and his casual attire seems to indicate that he’s not in her office for business. Could it be that Spencer is David’s biological father and he’s come to see Goodwin to discuss potentially meeting with David?
When you piece everything together, this certainly seems like a plausible situation. It would certainly be interesting to see how Sharon navigates the return of David’s biological father all these years later and in helping her son in this journey to meeting his biological father. If Spencer is indeed David’s father, we’re sure his arrival will also stir up some complicated feelings for Sharon, after all she likely has not seen Spencer since he broke things off with her decades ago due to her decision to keep their baby.
We imagine it won’t be easy for her to see Spencer walk back into her life, but we know at the end of the day Sharon will do all she can to support David. If that means supporting his desire to get to know his biological father, we’re certain she’ll stand by her son’s side and be there for him as he embarks on that journey!
