Chicago Med fans are in for quite an exciting episode on March 18, with the writers lining up the returns of four major recurring characters in season 11, episode 15! NBC has released photos for episode 15, “The Cost of Living,” which gives us a glimpse into the returns of four major recurring characters.
The first notable recurring guest star returning in episode 15 is Manish Dayal as Dr. Theo Rabari, who will be making his first appearance on the show since episode 11. Theo will be part of one of the episode’s central storylines, returning to Gaffney to tackle yet another complicated case with Dr. Charles. This time around, the pair will be treating a patient whose unique quirk leaves both Charles and Theo baffled, which has us more than a little intrigued.

It’s not often that a patient manages to baffle a duo such as Charles and Theo, so it’s going to be interesting to see what the patient’s quirk is. Given that Charles and Theo end up sitting with Goodwin in her office at some point during the case, it seems they’re going to need to hit a hurdle at some point that will require Goodwin’s assistance—perhaps in getting sign-off for a course of treatment or clearing some red tape.
Also returning in episode 15 are Tetona Jackson and Zach Appelman as Esme and Jeremy Lockhart, a couple we first met in the second episode of the season. The pair came through Med’s ED hoping to make sure their baby was okay, but Jeremy’s symptoms led to a heartbreaking discovery that he had an aggressive cancer and likely only had months to live.
The pair returned for the fall finale and midseason premiere, in which Jeremy opted for a dangerous surgery in hopes that it would extend his life expectancy enough for him to meet his child. The surgery had some complications but ultimately succeeded with buying Jeremy some additional time, and it seems we’re about to reach a major milestone in the couple’s journey.
The promo for the episode includes a shot of Esme in the OR with a concerned look on her face as we see a small bag-valve mask being used, presumably on her baby, as Hannah announces, “She’s not breathing.” The moment certainly creates a sense of fear; however, we’re not too worried, as we don’t anticipate the writers will actually put the couple through the loss of their baby given everything they’ve gone through. We are, however, concerned about Jeremy, as we see a shot of him in a hospital bed and know his time is likely coming to an end.
With the episode synopsis teasing that Dean will confront his own mortality, it seems likely that working on Jeremy’s case will be the catalyst for this confrontation as he witnesses Jeremy becoming a father, knowing he won’t be able to watch his child grow up. It’s an emotional storyline that would understandably leave Dean shaken and questioning his own mortality and its impact on his ability to be in the life of his and Hannah’s child.

As for the fourth and final recurring guest star back in episode 15? That would be Merrin Dungey’s Dr. Jennifer Kingston, who is back for the first time since episode 11. Given that Jeremy has landed back in the hospital, it makes sense that Kingston is back, as she’s been part of his care team since his diagnosis.
Her return is also perfectly timed to Dean confronting his mortality on the case, given the pair recently began seeing one another. It'll be interesting to see if Dean confides in Kingston about his feelings or if he pushes her away while working through things.
We’ll find out what the writers have in store when Chicago Med season 11, episode 15 airs Wednesday, March 18, at 8/7c on NBC.
