It seems a familiar face will be passing through Gaffney Chicago Medical Center once again! NBC has released the synopsis information for Chicago Med season 11, episode 15, “The Cost of Living,” set to air on March 18, and, in doing so, has confirmed the return of Manish Dayal as Dr. Theo Rabari!
Dayal will return for what will be his fourth episode this season as Theo, marking his first episode back on the show since episode 9 aired on January 14. Details about the case Theo and Charles will be teaming up on this time remain limited, but the duo will once again be teaming up on a complicated case with some unique intricacies.
As the synopsis for the episode teases, Charles and Theo will be baffled by the quirk of their latest patient. It’s not often that Charles is completely puzzled by something that seems illogical, and knowing this patient will have the same effect on both him and Theo certainly suggests that this will be no ordinary patient. Though, that’s beginning to become the primary catalyst for Theo’s appearances this season.
Each time Theo has passed through the doors at Gaffney, he’s partnered with Charles to tackle interesting cases where things are not always what they seem. This has led to a really unique and fascinating relationship between Charles and Theo, as Theo challenges Charles in a way no previous mentee has ever challenged him. Both Charles and Theo have very unique approaches to medicine, and those unique styles have led to one of the show’s greatest dynamics.
With each additional appearance on the show, the Chicago Med writers leave us wanting more of Theo, which is certainly rare for a guest character. He’s given Charles a brilliant scene partner to play off of within the same field of medicine, something that has been lacking on the show for years following the departure of Rachel DiPillo as Dr. Sarah Reese.
While we love getting to see Charles work alongside the rest of the Gaffney staff on cases, it’s not quite the same as watching him collaborate with a colleague in the same field. Theo makes Charles better, and vice versa, with each doctor’s unique strengths bringing something to the table, with the end result being an amazing partnership between the characters. It also brings welcome conflict, as the pair don’t always see eye-to-eye on the course of treatment, but that conflict helps add another layer to the dynamic.
It’s not conflict thrown in for the sake of creating drama, but rather conflict that leads to meaningful growth and conversations between the characters. In their brief interactions, we’ve already seen the pair learning from each other and using their differences to make them stronger. That’s what a good mentor-mentee relationship should look like.
Hopefully, the Chicago Med writers will see the continued value Theo brings to the show and increase Dayal’s presence as the season continues and also heading into season 12. We’d honestly love to see Dayal bumped up to series regular for season 12, as it would be nice to see Theo appearing on the show in a more regular cadence.
For now, we can look forward to his next appearance when Dayal returns in Chicago Med season 11, episode 15, “The Cost of Living,” airing Wednesday, March 18, at 8/7c on NBC!
