Death may be about to knock on the door of yet another character as Chicago Med season 11 draws to a close.
Heading into the Chicago Med season 11 finale, fans are on high alert after the penultimate episode of the season ended with Gaffney going into lockdown as a result of a Code Silver. The lockdown was implemented after a prisoner managed to overpower a guard and steal his weapon, triggering the lockdown.
The promo for the finale shows the armed man has taken Dean at gunpoint as he walks into a room with Ripley; however, it’s neither Dean nor Ripley who appears to be in the most danger in the episode. That honor goes to Frost’s father, James, who is likely to pass away by the episode’s end.
It was established in episode 15, “The Cost of Living,” that James was not suffering from MS, but rather that he had a terminal spinal cord mass. Upon making this discovery, Frost tried to get his father into a Mayo Clinic drug trial for an experimental treatment that could help treat the mass, as without treatment the mass would continue to grow and become fatal. In trying to help get his dad into the trial, Frost would come to learn that his dad had known about the mass this entire time and the only way for him to get the medication he needed was by Frost footing the very expensive bill.
Fast forward to episode 20, Frost’s mom, Celeste, revealed that the treatment was not working and that his father had been moved to hospice for end-of-life care.
While Frost is at odds with his father after learning that he knew about Ainsley taking advantage of him as a teen and doing nothing, the promo for the finale reveals that Frost goes to see his father in hospice care. It also seems to suggest that James will pass away at some point in the season 11 finale with a brief scene in which we see Frost yelling for help as his dad’s vitals begin to crash. Knowing that the spinal mass is fatal and that James was moved to hospice, this doesn’t seem like an example of the show faking viewers out by making it look as though a character is in danger only to find out there was no actual cause for concern.
All signs point towards James dying in the season 11 finale, paving the way for season 12 to explore how Frost moves forward in his life following his father’s death. While James’ death is coming sooner than we anticipated, it feels like a natural way to close out the season in bringing the storyline to a close and hopefully allowing Frost to make peace with his father before his death.
Should James’ death indeed come in the finale, it’ll be the second major death of a loved one connected to a central character this season following the death of Bert Goodwin earlier this season.
Fans can see how things play out in the Chicago Med season 11 finale when it airs Wednesday, May 13, at 8/7c on NBC, kicking off the One Chicago finale night festivities!
