The 2026 One Chicago season has not been kind to loved ones of our core characters. Already this season we’ve seen the deaths of Bert Goodwin on Chicago Med and Bob Ruzek on Chicago PD, and the Chicago Med season 11 finale brought about yet another death to complete the trifecta.
Warning: Spoilers ahead from the Chicago Med season 11 finale!
Heading into the final episode of season 11, we had a bad feeling that Frost might be about to lose his father, and that fear turned into reality in the finale. After being moved into hospice care, Frost’s dad sadly passed away, but not before Frost got the chance to make amends with his father and tell him goodbye.
After sending his mom home to get some rest, Frost hears James calling out for Celeste and tells him he sent her home to get rest. James is surprised that Frost came, as he asks him to forgive him, and Frost assures his dad that he has. He curls up in bed beside his dad as he assures him it’s okay to let go and he that doesn’t have to fight anymore as his dad takes his final breath.
From the moment we met James, it was clear his time on the show was likely to be limited. Upon returning to Frost’s life, we found out that James was suffering from MS, and his health was slowly declining. Episode 15, “The Cost of Living,” threw an unexpected curveball our way when it was revealed that James did not have MS but instead had a terminal spinal cord mass that was mimicking the side effects of MS.
Upon learning the truth about his dad’s diagnosis, Frost helped arrange for his father to receive experimental treatment in hopes that it would shrink the mass. However, we learned in the penultimate episode of the season that the treatments were not working. The mass was still growing, and James was moved to hospice care, implying that his days were limited.
While Frost did get the chance to say goodbye, it's a shame that James' journey on the show came to an end so abruptly. We would have loved to see the pair get the chance to mend fences, but that's honestly part of what made the storyline so impactful. You never know how much time you might have in life or when someone in your life might pass away, which makes those unfinished conversations and unresolved relationships hit even harder when they’re gone.
Hopefully, we'll get to see more of Frost's mother, Celeste, in season 12 and get to see the show explore how their relationship might evolve following James' death. While Celeste might not have known the truth about Ainsley like James, she was complicit in not protecting him during his days as a child actor, and we hope the show will give the characters the chance to unpack things further next season.
Chicago Med season 12 premieres this fall on NBC.
