Chicago PD boss hints one character could be going to trial or jail in season 14

Following the events of the Chicago PD season 13 finale, it seems that one character could end up on trial or behind bars for their actions.

It seems Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan is not ready to rule out the possibility that the events of the season 13 finale could land one character on trial or possibly behind bars come season 14.

Warning: Spoilers ahead from the Chicago PD season 13 finale.

The final hour of Chicago PD season 13 followed Imani, Voight, and the Intelligence Unit as they raced to find Kirby, the man responsible for abducting Imani’s sister Shari as a child. With Shari in custody, the team divided and conquered as they raced to track down any possible lead that could point them in the direction of Kirby as Imani tried to get her sister to provide them with answers that could lead to Kirby’s arrest.

During the investigation, Voight crossed paths with a man who had turned to Kirby when he was looking to score, and Voight was quick to notice how the man’s injuries matched those of the murder victim who first led them to Shari. He’d come to find out that Kirby had attacked the man using a knife that belonged to Shari and had forensics run tests on the victim to check for DNA transfers.

Shari would eventually agree to take Imani to Kirby, but it ended up being a trap as she led her sister right to Kirby, knowing he’d get the jump on her. After Kirby hit Imani over the head and handcuffed her, he ordered Shari to kill her, and Shari actually tried to shoot her sister. Thankfully, Imani acted fast and was able to disarm Shari and pull her into a headlock. Torres arrived in time to save Imani before Shari or Kirby could kill her, but the pair escaped and began running upstairs.

They’d eventually bump into Voight, who managed to disarm Kirby before killing him as he slammed the door against his head again, and again, and again until Burgess finally managed to stop him. Voight and Imani would choose to cover for Shari, telling the officers who arrived after to take statements about the incident that it was Kirby that fired the gun and tried to kill Imani. While the pair covered for her, the episode ended with a major cliffhanger as Voight revealed to Imani that it was Shari who had murdered Lila, not Kirby, as there were no DNA transfers from Kirby, only a hit for Shari’s DNA.

Upon learning the news, Imani asked whether her sister was going to go to prison, and the episode ended before Voight could respond.

The moment seemed to hint that perhaps Voight might cover up the crime, but it seems that might not be the case.

"Both options are on the table. We’ll get in the room in a couple of weeks, and we’ll be solving some of these questions. I think either way, we will lean into it," Sigan told Deadline when asked if there would be a trial or a jail sentence coming for Shari in season 14. "We’ll lean into sort of the decision they made in the aftermath of that decision and how it will affect both of these characters and Shari’s character as well. What will her life look like? Is it going to be a journey of hope and rehabilitation and finding yourself again? Is that possible for this person? So, yeah, it’s all on the table right now. I think there are so many possibilities."

Knowing how Voight has colored outside the lines in the past, it seems like there is a real chance that he might bury the evidence to help Imani’s sister. She finally got her back after years of looking for her, and we doubt Voight would want to be the one responsible for splitting the pair up again by sending Shari to prison.

That’s not to say it isn't possible, but Chicago PD has a way of playing it safe, and Voight covering up Shari’s crime seems like the most likely storyline for the show to explore. That’s not to say the truth might not come out eventually. However, it does seem likely that Voight is going to keep this secret given that he brought Imani out to a secluded area to give her this news rather than sharing it at the precinct or where anyone else might be listening.

It would be interesting to see the show charge Shari and see how Imani handles the idea of losing her sister so soon after discovering she’s still alive. If Imani is indeed sticking around, it also makes sense for the show to keep Shari around and use that storyline to further Imani’s personal backstory by exploring how the pair navigate this next chapter together.

We’ll find out what comes of Shari and whether she faces jail time for her actions when Chicago PD season 14 arrives this fall on NBC!
