Chicago PD fans might want to prepare themselves for the very real possibility that one member of the Intelligence Unit could be MIA for the second week in a row.
Last week, the Intelligence Unit worked with a skeleton crew of only four members of the team coming together to work the case of the week. Part of this smaller team was due to the departure of LaRoyce Hawkins, whose character Atwater left the Intelligence Unit in episode 2 to accept a job in Atlanta. The other reason for this was because the episode unexpectedly sidelined Benjamin Levy Aguilar, with no appearance from Torres across the episode.
Characters missing a few episodes is nothing new for the One Chicago shows, as series regulars tend to miss at least a few episodes every season as part of cost-cutting measures. These episodes are often spaced out throughout the season so that an actor doesn’t miss a large number of episodes all at once, though that approach has been taken on a few occasions over the years when an actor will miss back-to-back episodes… and we might be getting our first instance of this already with episode 4.
Although it’s not yet confirmed whether Levy will or will not appear in Chicago PD season 14, episode 4, airing on October 28, all signs are pointing toward him missing another episode.
Episode 4 will center heavily around an eager young officer who is assigned to one of Chicago’s most dangerous districts and lands on the Intelligence Unit’s radar when he catches a case the team has an eye on. It’s clear this young officer is going to play a pivotal role in the episode, and we see him front and center in the promo for the episode. In fact, he gets more screentime than any of our series regulars in the promo, which is a hint that this is going to be a very big episode for the character.
In the promo, we get glimpses of Voight, Burgess, and Imani, confirming they’ll all be present within the episode. And while Ruzek does not appear in the promo for the episode, he’s featured prominently in two of the three photos NBC dropped from the episode, confirming that he will also be involved in the case. The limited photos also feature Voight and Burgess along with the young officer at the center of the episode.
Nowhere in any of the promotional materials is there any mention or sign of Torres, which is a major red flag that he won’t appear in the episode.
Sure, it could simply be that he has a very small role in the episode, and that’s why he’s not featured in any of the promotional materials; however, history has shown us that when a character fails to appear in the promo, episodic stills, and the synopsis, it’s typically because they don’t appear in the episode airing that week.
If Torres is indeed sidelined for the second consecutive episode, let’s hope that the Chicago PD writers will at least give us some explanation as to why he’s not present this week. This was something we weren’t given in episode 3, as Torres simply didn’t appear, and there was no reference to why he wasn’t working the case with the rest of the Intelligence Unit. We understood not addressing his absence when it was a one-off moment, but it’ll be a bit jarring if Torres isn’t in episode 4 and there is no mention of what he’s up to once again.
Chicago PD airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
