After bringing fans an Atwater-focused episode last week, Chicago PD is about to give yet another original member of the Intelligence Unit the chance to take center stage! Chicago PD season 13, episode 19, “Going Back,” will bring fans a Ruzek-focused episode, and it seems that Ruzek is going to be put through the wringer this episode.
“You were found unconscious, and you have a concussion,” Burgess informs Ruzek in the opening line of the promo as she sits by his bedside in a hospital room. As he comes to, Ruzek informs her that he can’t remember anything at all, to which Burgess informs him, “You were investigating a murder. Do you know why you were attacked? Do you remember anything?”
The promo cuts together various moments that occurred leading up to Ruzek’s attack teasing that his mind holds the key to the mystery, which makes complete sense. It’s clear that Ruzek was likely getting close to cracking the case when he was attacked, presumably because his assailant was trying to stop Ruzek from getting to the truth.
At the heart of the mystery is a cold case that is connected to Ruzek’s father, Bob, tied to a VHS tape he found among his father’s belongings. We get a glimpse of this mystery VHS tape in one of the few images NBC released from the episode, the tape visible on the table in front of Ruzek.
Our only other photos from the episode see Ruzek walking the halls of the assisted living facility where his dad resides. In the first of the two images we see Ruzek on the phone as he’s walking through the hallway of the facility, while in the second photo we see him pausing to talk with a nurse outside his father’s door.
It's unclear how Ruzek's dad is going to factor into the episode. We're still thrown off by the episode's tease that Ruzek finds the tape in his dad's belongings, as this phrasing seems to suggest that perhaps Ruzek's dad has passed away and Ruzek uncovers the tape while gathering his father's things from the assisted living facility.
Could the nurse in the photo above be offering her condolences to Ruzek as he prepares to enter his father's room to gather his belongings? That is certainly a possibility, but there is no telling whether Ruzek's dad will have passed away off-camera ahead of the episode or if Ruzek is simply gathering some things from his room for another reason.
What we do know is that the VHS tape and Ruzek's attack will send the Intelligence Unit scrambling as they try to uncover the truth about the cold case and bring the individual behind the crime to justice.
We'll find out how they manage to do that and learn the fate of Ruzek's father when the episode airs tonight at 10/9c on NBC!
