Heading into Chicago PD season 13, episode 20, we knew that Imani would be taking center stage and the opening montage from the episode makes that abundantly clear.

As the episode opens, Imani and Voight work to track down leads on her sister, Shari, as we see the pair teaming up and taking to the streets to chase down leads in a montage that unfolds over several days. Eventually, we catch up with the pair as they chase a lead that leads them to a young woman Imani suspects could be her sister.

When they arrive at the address, they find the body of a young girl murdered, suggesting that she was dumped at the scene sometime in the last 12 hours. As Voight prepares to call in the murder, Imani spots a phone by the girl’s body and is shocked to find a photo on its homepage of the murdered girl and a woman she’s certain is her sister.

Torres, Atwater, and Ruzek arrive on the scene, and Voight brings them up to speed on the case. Patrol has started canvassing the area for witnesses, but Voight makes it clear they’re running point on the case. Imani notices a camera at one of the units across from the woman’s home and acquires the footage. After combing through, she spots the victim, Laura, and the woman she believes to be her sister.

Voight assures her they’re going to work every lead and asks her to assure him that she knows they’re working a young woman’s homicide. As they speak, Voight gets word that a sample gathered at the scene is a hit for Shari, meaning Imani is correct: the woman in the photo with the victim is indeed her sister.

GPS data from Laura’s phone directs them to a complex that has multiple complaints and is a potential prostitution site. They head out to the complex and discover blood, which confirms this was the kill site, and Voight calls in backup to process the scene as Imani steps outside to get some air and get her emotions in check.

While outside, Imani spots a man walking into the complex, and he tries to flee, but she jumps into his car and is able to arrests him, harming her leg in the process. Imani presses the man for information, and he claims the women attacked him. He met them here, but once he arrived, they jumped him and took his wallet, and he came back in hopes of finding his phone. He refers to Laura and Shari as Lila and Sable. He claimed to see them get dropped off by another man, who they theorize is their pimp.

The team begins looking into the site the man uses to set up the meeting with Lila and Sable, and they track down the number to a burner, which is pinging at a known trap house. Imani suggests they head to the trap house, as the pimp and Shari could be there now, as Voight suggests they set up surveillance.

Imani and Voight settle outside the house, but there has been no one in or out for the last two hours. She asks for him to let her go undercover to check the house. Voight agrees to the plan and sends Torres in with her. The pair make their way through the house searching and find a woman who was on the website, a woman who recognizes both Laura and Shari.

They bring the girl down to the precinct, and she informs Voight and Imani that she’s no longer working for the site. She tells them how she ran with them; they were cool, and she needed cash, so she let Shari’s man run her for a bit. Laura and Shari then began to rob their johns to score. That’s when she drops a major piece of news, informing Imani that Shari is married and it’s her husband, Kirby, who runs her and he’s also abusive.

Ruzek begins working to run down leads into Kirby as Imani and Voight head out to a strip club Shari used to work at. The bartender reveals that Kirby used to pimp Shari out in the parking lot, but one day she just stopped clocking in, and then it was radio silence. Whenever she left, she didn’t clear out her locker, and the bartender allowed them to look inside. Inside the locker, they find a Venture card that leads them to Shari’s alias and a possible address.

The house is empty, but during the search Torres uncovers a stack of IDs and passports that paint a picture that reveals that Kirby abducted Shari and pretended to be her father when she was young, before changing their cover as Shari grew older and he began posing as her husband. Intelligence runs the aliases to try to find a lead as Torres recognizes one of the fakes as connecting to an old case he worked on.

Torres gets a name connected to a man who used to make fake IDs, and they head out to speak with him. As they question him at the door, Imani hears a voice inside and pushes past into the house, where she spots Kirby. He races out of the house and takes off via car with Imani giving chase as Torres checks the rest of the house. While Imani loses Kirby in pursuit, Torress finds Shari at the house and brings her into the district.

Imani makes her way up to the interrogation room where Shari is being held, but her reunion does not quite go as she hoped with Shari having no idea who Imani is.

With just one episode left this season, we're going to see the fallout of their reunion in the Chicago PD season 13 finale when it airs Wednesday, May 6, at 10/9c on NBC.
