Last week’s Chicago PD was one of the most unique episodes we’ve seen in the show’s history and definitely lived up to the hype. The episode saw a crime hitting close to home for Burgess and Ruzek when a young woman in their neighborhood was murdered. In addition to seeing the team work the case as we’ve grown accustomed to, the episode wove in narrations from the victim, which allowed us to connect to her in a way we don’t often have the chance to do when it comes to the case-of-the-week characters.
It was a beautiful episode that ended with Burgess and Ruzek making a major life decision in taking steps to leave the neighborhood and their close community, to move to a different part of the city. It’s a decision that is sure to have ripple effects in the episodes ahead as the pair make a move that is best for their family, seeking out a better place for Mac to grow up.
The storyline is likely to shift to the back burner for the next few weeks, though, as NBC prepares to shift the focus to a few other characters in the ensemble, beginning this week with a Voight-forward episode.

Yes, Chicago PD is on tonight, October 22, 2025
Don’t worry, we’ve not yet reached the point in the season when NBC is scheduling breaks for the One Chicago shows. Chicago PD will be airing a new episode this Wednesday, October 22. This marks the fourth consecutive week, NBC has aired a new episode with no breaks since season 13 kicked off in early October.
While a break is surely coming as we usually see our first break of the season around the sixth or seventh episode of the season, fans can look forward to a new episode this evening and it’s going to be a big episode for one particular character.

What to expect in Chicago PD season 13 episode 4
NBC hasn’t provided too much information about the fourth episode of Chicago PD, “Root Cause,” but we do know the episode will be a Voight-centric episode.
The promo for the episode sees Voight discovering an envelope on the windshield of his truck. Inside is a photo of a young boy in what appears to be a hospital bed, and the boy is not in good shape with bruises covering his body. At one point, Voight shows the photo to the Intelligence Unit’s new addition, Eva Imani, who has a lot of questions about who the boy is, where the photo came from, and whether it’s related to a case; however, we don’t get any answers from Voight in the trailer, leaving us with just as many questions as Eva has.
The synopsis fails to shine a light on the mystery as well, simply teasing that a surprising detail of Voight’s past resurfaces. Could the boy in the photo be someone from an old case Voight worked, or could it be a photo of a young Voight? We’re hoping to find out in the episode!
Elsewhere in the episode, the Intelligence Unit will be working a case involving a string of violent robberies that “digs up one family’s secrets.” Could the case be connected to Voight and the mysterious photo of the boy which showed up on his truck? That is a question we’ll get answers to in Chicago PD season 13, episode 4 when it arrives on NBC and Peacock!
