On the heels of Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan teasing her openness to bring back familiar faces from the show’s past, it seems an original member of the cast is stirring up speculation over a potential return seven years in the making.
Chicago PD alum Jon Seda has sent the One Chicago fans into a frenzy by posting a rare throwback revisiting his time on Chicago PD playing Detective Antonio Dawson. “Remember when… good times,” Seda captioned the post, which included a series of photos from his Chicago PD days.
The post immediately sparked speculation that Seda was hinting at a return to the show after seven years away, and understandably so. Since exiting the show in 2019, Seda has put some distance between himself and the One Chicago franchise and focused on using his social media accounts to promote his new projects.
The only time he has posted anything directly about the One Chicago franchise since exiting the show in 2019 was in a 2024 post in which he reunited with former co-stars Jason Beghe and Jesse Lee Soffer, as well as Chicago PD star Benjamin Levy Aguilar, who joined the cast after Seda’s departure from the show. In that post, Seda kept the focus more on how great it was to see his former co-stars than on talking about the show itself.
While it could be that Seda was simply feeling nostalgic, the timing of his post certainly has raised some eyebrows, with fans flooding the comments about whether the post was being used to tease a potential return. Of course, Seda did not engage with the commenters, but we have to wonder if they are onto something, as his timing is suspicious.
At this time, there has been no indication of Seda returning, but his return would certainly be welcomed by the fans, and we’re long overdue for an appearance from the man who literally helped to make Chicago PD possible. Seda was the first connection we had to the CPD, originating the role of Antonio on Chicago Fire. He then made the jump to Chicago PD when NBC greenlit the spinoff and would later temporarily leave Chicago PD to star in the first and only season of Chicago Justice.
Antonio was written out of the franchise officially in the Chicago PD season 7 premiere when it was revealed that he had been taken to an off-book rehabilitation center. We’d learn a few episodes later that Antonio had resigned from the CPD and moved to Puerto Rico to be with family and would learn in a Chicago Fire episode sometime after that he was working as part of a crisis response team in the Bahamas.
Chicago PD could take a page from Chicago Med’s book and start bringing back some legacy characters for guest appearances that celebrate the show’s history. Hopefully, Seda’s post leads to an on-screen return for Antonio in Chicago PD, as it would be nice to see what Antonio has been up to in the last several years since leaving Chicago. We'd love to see him return to work on a case with the Intelligence Unit, so let's hope the powers that be make it happen.
