It's finally time for new seasons of the One Chicago shows to begin on NBC with the premieres of Chicago Fire season 15, Chicago Med season 12, and Chicago PD season 14 rolling out on Oct. 7. As is normal for this franchise, fans will be in for some casting shuffles, though some are more permanent than others. When it comes to Med, Dr. Lenox's future might be confusing.
Based on where Lenox's story left off in the Chicago Med season 11 finale, fans who haven't been keeping track of the cast's happenings over the summer might not realize why she wouldn't be prominently featured in season 12 as normal. But Sarah Ramos won't actually be appearing in the show this season as normal.
Toward the end of last season, Ramos announced that she was pregnant with her first child with husband Matt Spicer. Seeing as Lenox and Ripley (Luke Mitchell) are still in the very early days of their relationship, the actress' pregnancy wasn't written into the show. Does that mean Sarah Ramos is leaving Chicago Med for season 12? Well, yes and no... It's complicated.

Sarah Ramos will be back in Chicago Med season 12
Ramos will be leaving the series, but it's only a temporary absence to accommodate the actress' pregnancy. Don't worry: She will be back as Lenox before we know it!
While it was initially reported that Sarah Ramos would miss the "majority" of season 12's first episodes, we weren't sure how many episodes that would amount to. Thankfully, showrunner Allen MacDonald quickly clarified what fans can anticipate from Lenox's on-screen absence, confirming that Ramos would not appear in the first five episodes of the season.
The end of Ramos' pregnancy lined up with the Chicago Med summer hiatus, and even though she hasn't formally announced the arrival of her child on social media, she appeared at an Emmy Awards event for The Bear in September and wasn't pregnant. Ramos' maternity leave likely didn't send her back to Chicago for filming until early this fall.
Before the Chicago Med season 12 premiere, MacDonald didn't reveal what would suddenly force Lenox away from Gaffney and how she would be temporarily written out of the show. Even with a short-term exit, we want to know where Lenox is while she's offscreen and how she will continue to be incorporated into the storylines, especially Ripley's, until she eventually returns full time.
As of the premiere of Chicago Med season 12, we still haven't caught a glimpse of Ramos back on set as Lenox in her signature white coat and scrubs. Ramos hasn't shared photos or videos from behind the scenes, though hopefully now that the new season has arrived, we'll soon receive word and photographic evidence that Lenox is back in the building.
Watch new episodes of Chicago Med on Wednesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next-day on Peacock.
