Another season of Chicago Med has come to an end, and fans are already worried about the future of one key member of the Gaffney family: Sharon Goodwin.
Heading into the finale, we worried about the futures of many characters, but Goodwin was not one of them. Perhaps that was the brilliance of the finale’s twist, as we didn’t have any inclination that Goodwin’s future at Gaffney was in any danger at all. We were so focused on Charles being pushed out by Theo and Dean’s life being in jeopardy as a result of the gunman on the loose that we never anticipated that Goodwin would be the one in the most danger.
Picking up where the penultimate episode left off, Goodwin and Charles are rallying for a fight with the board to help Charles keep his job. When Charles tells Goodwin his suspicions about Theo being a sociopath, she immediately questions whether he can prove it and mentions leaking the information to the board as a hail mary to help save his job. Charles immediately shoots down the idea as he makes it clear that he has no intention of using this information to sway the board, as it would be unethical and against everything he stands for as a doctor.
Later, Goodwin tries to get Miranda to order an fMRI and other tests, knowing it would lead to the board discovering the truth about Theo, under the guise of it only being fair since they’re trying to use Charles’ tests to prove he’s unfit to lead the department. Miranda shuts down the request and makes it clear they’ll be meeting as planned.
To Goodwin’s surprise, when she and Charles head to the board meeting, Miranda informs them that Theo removed himself from consideration for the position for personal reasons. She informs Charles that he’s to be restored as acting head of the department, and that’s when she drops a shocking revelation on the pair. While Charles’ job is safe, Goodwin is to leave Gaffney. Goodwin is shocked by Miranda’s comments about her leaving as Miranda makes it known that she knows it was Goodwin who leaked Theo’s medical records to the board, and this is her chance to resign and walk away.
Goodwin is not leaving Chicago Med as S. Epatha Merkerson inks a new deal for season 12
Although Goodwin's future at Gaffney is looking rocky and she's been backed into a corner, fans do not need to worry about S. Epatha Merkerson leaving the show.
Merkerson has signed on to return for season 12, which means that Goodwin is not going anywhere! Word of Merkerson's return for season 12 broke ahead of the finale, with Deadline reporting that both she and Oliver Platt (Charles) have inked new deals to return for season 12, assuring the original stars will remain on the show for another season.
The news could not have come at a better time for fans as it confirms that Goodwin will not be leaving the show, though it will be interesting to see how she finds a way out of the position she's landed in. Miranda is clearly gunning for her job and this is her latest attempt to push Goodwin out.
While we know that Goodwin will return, it will be interesting to see if the season opens with a time jump that reveals she kept her job or if she'll have been pushed out of her position and forced to fight back in the early part of the season. Whatever they have planned, we know Goodwin will remain part of Chicago Med and this was not an exit storyline.
