NCIS season 23 could show growth for Tim McGee's character if he got promoted after all

NCIS season 22 may be over, but we’re still thinking of what lies ahead for many of the characters. While we may have an idea about how some characters, like Agent Alden Parker (Gary Cole), may fare thanks to the season 22 finale episode, what is in store for Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray)?

McGee’s arc centered on his feeling that LaRoche was a mole within NCIS. This occurred after Nick Torres’s undercover identity was compromised, and the only person who had access to his personnel files was LaRoche himself.

Over the course of season 22, McGee attempted to find out what LaRoche was up to, but it began to affect both his professional and personal life. He was staying at the office more often than getting rest. At one point, his job was even on the line when LaRoche figured out he was watching him and filed a formal complaint.

In reality, LaRoche had been working as a double agent for the Secretary of Defense in order to discover plans involving the Nexus cartel. After the team discovered what was really going on, LaRoche stepped down and had some kind words with McGee.

He told him that despite their differences beforehand, he respected the other agent and was glad that if anyone had been the one to look into him, it was McGee. So, with the rivalry no longer in play, what does this mean for McGee going forward?

This now leaves the job of Deputy Director open again. Is there a possibility of McGee trying out for the job again, especially if the only reason he lost it was because LaRoche was working an undercover operation?

McGee has been a senior field agent for a long time, and he has shown a great ability to be in the acting director’s chair when it was needed. Seeing some growth for his character in season 23 and a possible change in scenery could be good in giving him something else to do. Plus, it would also give the show a chance to go in a direction it hasn’t gone before.

While we can’t imagine McGee doing paperwork more than field work, it could also give audiences a glimpse at what goes on for agents at the top who are doing more than just going after the bad guys.

We can’t imagine McGee not being at the desk helping the team solve crimes. However, if he got another opportunity to seek a promotion, it would breathe some new life into the show to watch him actively seek an opportunity that he didn’t get to have in season 22. McGee has been the longest-standing character of the series since Mark Harmon’s Agent Gibbs left, so fans would love to see more of him going forward.

NCIS is available to watch on Paramount+ while we wait for season 23 to air in the fall of 2025.
