When Grey’s Anatomy signed off the air in 2024 with its final episode before what has been a three-month break, ABC’s long-running medical drama ended with a major cliffhanger that left fans to wonder whether the show was about to lose yet another cast member.
In the season 21 fall finale, Lucas and Jo set out for what should have been a simple errand with the goal of getting some ice to assist patients back at the hospital amid a major heatwave. Unfortunately, fate had other plans for the duo as the pair ended up trapped in a gas station after a gunman barged in trying to score some cash.
The stress of the situation seemed to take a major toll on Jo who realized she was bleeding and began to fear for the life of her twins. Upon learning of Jo’s pregnancy, Lucas decided to take action and tried to reason with the gunman and convince him to let Jo leave. That plan failed and when the cashier grabbed a hidden baseball bat and took a swing at the gunman things quickly spiraled out of control.
Lucas took the opportunity to jump in and try to overpower the gunman, and their struggle ended with the gun going off leaving fans to worry that Lucas had been shot and could be in danger of dying in the gas station robbery in a fashion eerily similar to the way his grandfather died.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Lucas does not die in Grey’s Anatomy, surviving the convenience store robbery
While the Grey’s Anatomy season 21 fall finale made it seem like Lucas was in danger of dying, a newly released photo for the tenth episode of the season reveals Lucas survives the ordeal with the gunman. In fact, it looks like Lucas escaped the ordeal without any injury.
In the photo from episode 10, Lucas is seen sitting around with his fellow interns at Bailey’s house and there is no sign of injury to him in the photo such as a sling, cast, or bandages of any kind. This seems to suggest that the gunshot we heard at the end of the fall finale was a misdirect and that, in the end, we had nothing to worry about as Lucas is alive and well!

Episode 10 sees Bailey hosting an intern retreat at her home which is sure to make for an interesting episode and one that will be quite unique in taking the interns out of the hospital and bringing them together in a new setting. If there is one thing we’ve learned over the years, social gatherings outside the hospital often end in chaos and never go as planned, so we can only imagine what might go down as Bailey brings the interns together in the episode.
All we know is that we’re relieved to know Lucas does not die as we’ve really come to love his character and the last thing we wanted to see was another member of the Shepherd meet an untimely demise!
