ABC unveils fall premiere date for 9-1-1 season 8 (and we're thrilled)
9-1-1 is doing a season 8 rollout right. The first responder drama dropped a teaser for the upcoming season on social media at the same time that ABC rolled out its fall lineup. 9-1-1 has proven to be a strong ratings performer, and to the delight of fans everywhere, it will be maintaining its weekly time slot.
9-1-1 will return on Thursdays at 8 p.m. as the lead in to the new drama Doctor Odyssey. Grey's Anatomy, another long-running network staple, will round out at the evening at 10 p.m. All three shows will be airing their premieres on September 26, which makes sense when compared to previous 9-1-1 release dates.
9-1-1 will return on Thursday, September 26
Seasons 5 and 6 of the first responder drama premiered on September 20 and September 19, respectively, falling right within the sweet spot for returning fall shows. Season 7 broke the mold, airing on March 7, but that was only because of the Hollywood strikes, and the delayed production that resulted.
It's worth noting, of course, that 9-1-1 aired these previous seasons on FOX. The first responder drama was acquired by ABC shortly before its seventh season went into production, so this will actually mark the first time that a full season of the show will get to air on the network.
In April, when 9-1-1 was renewed for another season by ABC, actress Aisha Hinds gushed about the network and its decision to keep the show alive. "Grateful for our new home at @abcnetwork," she wrote. "The inimitable crew that executes our show with excellence and makes it look easy (when it’s definitely not)... Let's keep cooking!"
Season 8 will be 9-1-1's second season on ABC
While specific storylines involving the main characters have yet to be revealed, we do know that Christopher (Gavin McHugh), the son of Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman), will not present. At least, not during the season premiere.
Guzman shed light on the character's absence, and what it will mean for Eddie moving forward. "My hope is that Eddie has a good portion of time without Christopher," he told TV Line. "Which would allow him the opportunity to find new structure, maybe rework who he is a little bit."
Now that a release date is in sight, the wait will for new 9-1-1 will be much easier.
