After breaking the rules, where might Torres go in Chicago PD season 12?
Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) hasn't got it figured out yet. He's the youngest member of the IU, and he's still something of a mystery to Chicago PD fans. We don't know him as well as we do the rest of the team. This made some of his season 11 decisions pretty unexpected.
For one, Torres decided to start sleeping with one of his informants, Gloria Perez (Yara Martinez). This is something nobody on the team has done before. Furthermore, the character briefly considered a new life with Perez outside of the US, effectively given up on his sworn duties as an officer.
Torres has yet to find his footing on the show
To his credit, he came back to his sense. The fact that he got so close to giving it all up says a lot, however. It seems as though the Chicago PD writers are unsure of what to do with his character. He was introduced as a replacement for Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), and even got the Halstead seal of approval in the field, but he still has fairly limited screen time.
Season 12 is going to be an important period for the character. For one, Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) has left the show, meaning that there's going to be a new member of the IU. Torres will no longer be the least familiar person on the team, which could also translate to more screen time.
The character still wants to prove himself
Benjamin Levy Aguilar told Hello! Magazine that most of the character's arc thus far has been an effort to prove himself to his veteran peers:
"He's not necessarily a people pleaser but he has an internal battle of needing to prove things to himself so I think when he takes on these cases it's a need to really become the best that he can become."
This desire has definitely shone through in his actions, but season 12 may be better served from Torres learning to trust himself more, and not feel as though he has to shoulder the weight of every case he's given. It is, after all, a unit and not a one-man army.
Torres' love life is unclear heading into season 12
We're also curious to see how Torres' romance with Gloria Perez extends into the future. The last we saw of the latter, she had decided to stay in Chicago and be with Torres. We haven't heard from her since, though, which leads us to question whether they ended their tryst after the undercover case.
Chicago PD writers would be forgiven for not pursuing such a complicated relationship, but if they did, it could help to flesh out Torres in new and interesting ways. The bottom line is, Torres needs more screen time to prove that he's a valuable part of the ensemble and the show as a whole.
