A beloved Chicago Fire character just got promoted (and threatened)

It was a good thing on paper, but there seems to be a catch.

It was supposed to be all love during the wedding episode! Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) left her long-tenured position as head paramedic at Firehouse 51, and went off on her honeymoon after getting hitched to Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer).

It was about as happy as a Chicago Fire ending gets, but it spelled out future drama for another 51 medic: Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith). Violet was the maid of honor at the Brettsey wedding and she did a fantastic job of transforming the aquarium venue into a beautiful place to get married, but it wasn't a particularly happy hour of television for her.

Violet was promoted to head paramedic on her ambulance, which is undoubtedly an honor, and one that only seemed fair after her many years under Brett. The thing is, the character had very little time to celebrate her promotion because the Paramedic Chief wanted to drop by 51 and lecture Violet on her new duties.

Being strict on the job is one thing, but the Paramedic Chief crossed the line when she brought up Violet's relationship with the late Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas).

The chief basically threw the past romance in Violet's face, and made it seem as though Violet was a blemish on Hawkins' otherwise stellar resume.

The exchange felt bizarrely personal, and given that the Paramedic Chief is not someone we had met before, it's clear the show is setting her up to be something of an adversary for Violet moving forward.

It'll be interesting to see whether Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver) comes back into play, given her power position in the fire department, and the complicated relationship she had with both Violet and the late Hawkins. Perhaps we're looking at an instance of the Paramedic Chief and Jacobs working in tandem to make Violet's life as difficult as possible.

Jacobs did, after all, try to steal the head paramedic job from Violet when she was filling in for Brett in season 10. Either way, this newfound antagonism towards Violet aligns with what showrunner Andrea Newman told TVLine about the character's season 12 arc:

"She’s gone through a lot, and she’s going to come out of it much stronger. We get to see her step into the spotlight in a great way. "
