We almost forgot about the time these two characters dated...

Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) has always been good at her job, but she has a lot on her mind as of late. Between the planning of her wedding and the preparing for her move to Oregon, it's easy to see why she may make a few mistakes over the course of Chicago Fire's 12th season.

Brett made a relatively harmless mistake in the episode "The Little Things", and it not only caused a lot of stress for one of the other 51 members, it drummed up memories of a romance that fans have not thought about for years. The one between Brett and Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso).

Brett and Cruz are two of the most lovable characters on Chicago Fire, but it's frankly bizarre to look back upon Brett's first year on the show, and how she dated Cruz for a substantial amount of time.

It didn't really lead anywhere, as both parties realized they weren't right for each other, but it's become a storyline that very few people remember.

Well, the Chicago Fire writers remembered, as Cruz spent most of "The Little Things" thinking he wasn't invited to Brett's wedding. It's easy to see why: while everyone else was raving about how nice the invitations were, Cruz realized that he was basically the only guy in the 51 who didn't get one.

Cruz tried to play it off, but it was obvious that his feelings were hurt. Thankfully, the exes were able to communicate and sort things out by the end of the episode. As it turns out, Brett slipped Cruz's invite in the wrong locker, and chalked it up to a simple mistake.

Cruz admitted that he thought he was being excluded from the wedding due to the fact that he was an ex, and all was well between them once again. We placed the Brett and Cruz romance at the top of our recent list of the Chicago Fire romances you probably forgot, but we have to credit the writers for dusting off this ancient bit of history and incorporating it into the show in an organic way.

Cruz has had a tough season 12 so far. The character thought he was left out from Brett's wedding, and he's been clashing with one of his best friends in the firehouse, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney).

Severide is in the midst of figuring out his career path, as we discussed here, but if he chooses to leave the 51, Cruz may be looking at a pretty huge promotion in rank. Let's see him get a win!
