Chicago Justice didn't have what it takes to stand out in primetime, but we could see it getting rebooted

The black sheep in the One Chicago franchise may not be finished.

Do you remember when Chicago Fire started and the idea of a Chicago universe wasn't even on the table yet? I know I do. It was a great series that quickly gave us more characters that we wanted to follow. And thus was the Chicago family born.

From Chicago Fire to Chicago PD, the series in a way that was both organic and made sense. And even the addition of Chicago Med was on point. However, then they decided to add in Chicago Justice in 2017. Sadly, the series was only able to give us a single season, and while that seems wrong when compared to the rest of the franchise, it made sense to anyone who tuned in.

Chicago Justice was canceled after one season

It is entirely possible that Chicago Justice could have been a brilliant addition to the Chicago family, but the problem is that it never really found its footing. Instead, it felt like a Law & Order knockoff, and in essence it was. After all, Law & Order is in the same universe as the Chicago franchise.

We have had Chicago PD and Law & Order: SVU crossovers in the past. This meant that Chicago Justice would have needed to stand on its own in a very fresh way to bring people in and keep them coming back for more.

Was Chicago Justice a bad series? Not really, it just didn't work. It was okay in terms of the stories and the cast was great (Carl Weathers alone had us coming back for more). However, the problem is that it didn't give us anything new in an already overcrowded primetime.

It would have needed to eschew the typical lawyer based programming and given us something new in order to make the series stand out from the crowd.

Could Chicago Justice be rebooted in the future?

Although Chicago Justice has been gone for years, it is still possible that they could give it new life if they reimagined the series. Considering how much we still love the other shows in the Chicago Universe, it makes sense that we would still be interested in the idea of a Chicago Justice spin-off.

But instead of repeating the past, maybe it could be a bit more focused on the lives of the people working in the DAs office. Or perhaps we could tone down on some of the brilliance and really look at the nitty gritty of the cases.

When I say toning down on the "brilliance" I mean that our leading man was truly unsympathetic and instead was portrayed as almost being a know-it-all. So maybe if we either chose a new lead for the series or even gave us a more flawed character that we could get behind, things would be different for a rebooted Chicago Justice.

We don't really need another Chicago series right now, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't appreciate one. And if they were able to course correct on what went wrong the first time, maybe a refreshed Chicago Justice would be the perfect way to add something fresh to the franchise.
