Natalie Morales returning to Grey's Anatomy could mean drama for Amelia and Winston
If you need more Natalie Morales in your life, you will definitely want to tune into Grey’s Anatomy season 21. She is returning in a recurring capacity.
Variety confirmed the exciting news just as TVLine said that it couldn’t confirm or deny her return. Well, Dr. Monica Beltran is back, and that means drama. As she’s only in a recurring capacity for now, it could mean that she will leave as the drama kicks off. Of course, there’s the opportunity for her to be promoted to series regular in the future.
Morales is guaranteed for six episodes for Grey's Anatomy season 21 right now, and there is the option for more. I guess that depends on the storylines chosen.
Will more Natalie Morales mean a love triangle in Grey’s Anatomy season 21?
Since Morales’ Dr. Beltran turned up at Grey Sloan Memorial, it looked like Amelia would get yet another love interest. There were hints that they were attracted to each other, but Beltran pushed Amelia away. Beltran revealed that she was dealing with a difficult ex-husband.
As Winston dealt with the aftermath of choosing to sign the divorce papers and not get back with Maggie, he and Beltran connected. They ended up hooking up at the end of season 20, leaving fans with their jaws on the floor.
In the TVLine piece about what to expect, showrunner Meg Marinis did say that if Beltran was coming back, this messy love triangle would need to be addressed. It is certainly messy. Winston is Amelia’s sort of ex-brother-in-law. I saw sort of because Amelia and Maggie are sisters-in-law through marriage. Amelia and Winston need to work together after this.
"Monica brings something different out in each of our characters. So if and when she returns, [her flirtation with Amelia and hookup with Winston] will definitely need to be addressed."
It’s not like Winston is really at fault here. He had no idea that Amelia was interested in Beltran when he hooked up with her. Really, it’s Beltran who has come up with a reason not to be with Amelia and hooked up with Winston. Is that because she wants something more than just a hookup with Amelia? Possibly, but there’s also the possibility that Winston isn’t great at hookups (he dated Maggie immediately after hooking up with her) which causes further problems for Amelia and Winston.
Dr. Beltran will be paging back into Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 2 and we’re ready for the messy love triangle drama to unfold.
